Table Tennis
At the NCTTA West Regionals in Burlingame, San Francisco, California, the UBC table tennis team displayed remarkable resilience and skill. Despite entering the Co-ed category as underdogs, they surpassed expectations and clinched the third position. In the Women’s team category, their performance was even more impressive, achieving second place and demonstrating their strong presence in the sport. This performance ensures our spot in the National Championships next month in Wisconsin.
Out of the four quarterfinals in women’s singles, three of them were played by UBC women- Grace Zhang, Poppy Li and Akkshita Guptaa.
Lak represented the UBC in the men’s singles draw. Facing opponents with higher ratings, Lak’s performance was nothing short of spectacular. He finished in the Top 8 men’s singles which means direct qualification for Lak in the Nationals.
Shoutouts
- Adrian and Kevin for their journey through the tournament, showcasing their ability to rise above expectations. They played a major role in the position determining match to ensure we qualify for Nationals.
- Poppy and Akkshita for managing to play throughout the days contributing in the Women’s, Co-ed and their individual matches. They displayed a spectacular play in the nail-biting qualification round against higher rated players.
- Diana for cheering for the entire team and also ensuring that everyone gets to eat lunch.
Men’s Tennis
Over the weekend, the UBC Men’s tennis team competed in Westerns against UofA. Women’s Tennis
This past weekend, the UBC Women’s Tennis Team competed in the Western Championships against UofA. After some really close matches, UBC just fell short of the win. This concludes the season for the birds, but they are ready to work even harder next season!
Women’s Ultimate
This past weekend, the Birdies flew down to California for their second USAU tournament this season. Despite several challenges, such as delayed flights and unfavourable weather conditions, the Birdies were unphased as they went 3-0 on Day 1. On Sunday, the team continued to build on their momentum, facing UC Santa Barbara, Colorado, and Vermont in quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, respectively. Defeating the Colorado team, who had ended UBC’s hopes of a National Championship last season, was huge, but the Birdies were still hungry for the Stanford Invite title. The final was a back-and-forth battle, with UBC scoring the first break point of the game. However, Vermont tested UBC right to the end, forcing universe point. Unfortunately, the Birdies couldn’t punch in the last point, settling for runners-up of Stanford Invite 2024. The team is more fueled than ever to hit the field training and build on their learnings from this past weekend. Next up is Northwest Challenge in a couple of weeks, and the Birdies will be ready for more intense competition.
