Have you heard of the ParticipACTION Community Challenge? Every June, ParticipACTION Canada goes out on a mission to find Canada’s Most Active Community. The community that wins is awarded $100,000 in cash prize to fund local physical activity initiatives! Individuals and organizations can track their physical activity participation by registering on the ParticipACTION website to help boost their community’s overall score based on the entered postal code. To learn more about how the challenge works, check out this FAQ.
In support of the 2024 ParticipACTION Community Challenge, the Move U Crew is excited to introduce a new walking/wheeling series this summer: Cultural Crawls with the Move U Crew! Thanks to funding provided by ParticipACTION Canada, each “crawl” will highlight a culturally-themed and wheelchair accessible walk within Vancouver to explore the culturally hidden gems of Vancouver for FREE, including:
- The Historic Chinatown Walking Tour in partnership with Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden
- The Really Gay History Tour in partnership with Forbidden Vancouver Walking Tours
- The Decolonization Tour in partnership with Belkin Art Gallery
The purpose of each crawl is two-fold:
- To encourage equity-deserving participants and allies to unpack the power and history behind a place of interest
- To allow folks to engage in low-impact exercise through walking or wheeling
For a breakdown of each crawl, check out the descriptions written by our community partners below and hit the registration buttons! Spots are limited.

June 19 | The Really Gay History Tour
Vancouver is home to Davie Street, one of North America’s most vibrant gay villages. Our city’s annual PRIDE parade draws crowds in the tens of thousands. Our city has openly gay politicians and monuments to gay activists. But it wasn’t always this way…
Meet the unsung heroes of Vancouver’s LGBTQ2+ community who forever changed the social fabric of our country. From the drag queen who fought for federal decriminalization to North America’s first openly gay church minister, Vancouver has played a larger-than-life role in the queer liberation movement.
Researched, designed, and guided by Forbidden Vancouver storyteller Glenn Tkach, the Really Gay History Tour weaves a colourful history of people and events that sets the stage for the inclusive society we all now enjoy. For members of the LGBTQ2+ community and allies alike this is a must-do experience. So join Glenn as you laugh, cry, celebrate and feel true PRIDE on the Really Gay History Tour.
Date: Tuesday June 25, 2024
Time: 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM
Starting Location: Brent Sparrow Jr.’s Musqueam Post, sʔi:ɬqəy̓ qeqən (2016), near the UBC Bookstore @ 6200 University Blvd
June 25 | Decolonization Tour
The Decolonization Tour guided by the Belkin Art Gallery highlights site-specific artworks by Indigenous artists and raises questions around issues of place, space and identity. Considering how these works address urgent social and political concerns, we’ll discuss ideas of settler colonialism, decolonization, reconciliation, protocol and the history of UBC’s Vancouver campus, which is located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people.
Please note that attendees will be expected to engage in critical self-reflection and discussion regarding their own identity and relationship to Musqueam land in a way that feels most safe to them. Given the sensitive nature of the topics to be discussed, attendees will be encouraged to check in with themselves and take a break whenever necessary.
If registration is full, you may add yourself to the waitlist or check out these free individual ways to get active in June! You also may be interested in registering for any of our Wellbeing Walks & Rolls that happen every other Wednesday at UBC this summer. Click the link below!
