Throughout the summer, we’ve received a lot of questions from our followers about Recreation North. We’re here to provide some clarity and answer the most common queries.
What is UBC Recreation Centre North?
Recreation Centre North is a new facility currently being built on the large plaza space situated immediately north of the UBC Life Building. The new facility will provide much needed recreation space including a state of the art fitness centre, three gymnasiums, an indoor run, roll, walk track, and many other amenities.

When will Rec North be open?
Recreation North is currently expected to open its doors in early 2025.
Will students need to pay to use the facilities?
Just like the current Student Recreation Centre, parts of the facility will be available to access for free such as the gymnasiums for drop-in sports, studio for drop-in activities, and the run, roll, walk track. The fitness centre however will only be accessible to those who purchase a fitness membership.

Will the Fitness Membership pricing be different for Rec North?
No changes here! The pricing for term-long Fitness Memberships remains the same, but with the added benefit of gaining access to the new facilities at Recreation Centre North.
Is there a climbing wall/cave?
No, Recreation Centre North will not have a climbing wall/cave. With that said, we will continue to offer bouldering at the BirdCoop Climbing/Bouldering Cave located in the SRC.

Will there be any equipment dedicated to power/Olympic lifting such as platforms?
Yes! The new Recreation Centre North facility will feature a dedicated Heavy Lifting area specifically designed with power and Olympic lifting in mind. This space will include Olympic platforms, a power cage combo, and racks for lifting throughout the facility.
But that’s not all—there will be a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment available for all routines. To give you a sneak peak into confirmed equipments, take a look here:

How big is the facility?
The new Recreation Centre North facility is designed to offer a top-tier fitness experience for everyone. Spanning an impressive 101,000 square feet over four levels, the building features three gymnasium courts, an indoor run, roll, walk track, cardio and weightlifting areas, and multipurpose rooms. You’ll also find two large studios for group fitness and drop-in activities, state-of-the-art equipment, and hundreds of lockers for convenience.
With expansive floor-to-ceiling windows offering stunning views, the space is thoughtfully designed to prioritize accessibility and comfort, ensuring plenty of room to move and explore.
