As anticipation builds for the opening of Rec North, we’re excited to share an exclusive first look at UBC’s new 4-level fitness centre and its extensive range of fitness equipment. With three times the space of the current Student Recreation Centre, Rec North will bring expanded access to state-of-the-art resources for members starting in early 2025.

How to Use This Blog: To explore, drop down each level’s section below to see visuals and descriptions of the equipment planned for each area.
Level 0
Connected to the Life Building by an underground pathway, Level 0 creates a seamless link from the current ARC into the new fitness space. While it’s technically the first level of the fitness centre, it’s called Level 0 since it connects to slightly lower sections of the building. Think of it as a basement level, but elevated above the true basement. While the fitness area is separate, nearby facilities on this level include a multifunctional room, universal change rooms, lockers, and studio space—all part of the adjacent side of the building. On the fitness side, you’ll find cardio equipment, weightlifting areas, cable machines and more.
All of our Olympic lifting platforms are equipped with SVA sound-dampening technology, designed to minimize noise and vibration for a more comfortable environment.
Level 1
Level 1 is your go-to floor for all things selectorized and plate-loaded! With a full lineup of equipment, this level allows for a complete full-body workout using machines designed for both efficiency and variety in strength training.
Rec North will offer both selectorized and plate-loaded versions of many machines. Selectorized machines allow you to adjust resistance with a convenient pin system, while plate-loaded machines let you add weight plates manually for a more customized workout.
Level 2
Unique to Level 2 is its connection to the indoor Run, Roll, and Walk track. While the track is open for public use, members can easily transition from it into the fitness centre (with a sign-in) and also enjoy access to cardio machines on this floor. This setup offers the flexibility to combine cardio on the track with strength training in the fitness centre.
A 8-bay functional rig designed for a comprehensive training experience. It features a unique bridge for monkey bars, pull-ups, rock climbing grips, and resistance band exercises. Additional features include suspension trainer anchors for bodyweight and core workouts, dip and plyo/step stations and more.
