Run Club Leader Volunteer Position

 

Who can apply to be a run club leader? 

Any UBC community member can apply to be a run club leader regardless of whether you are experienced or new to running. Applicants must be free on Tuesdays during the Winter 2025 term from 4:45 PM to 6:00 PM.

All interested applicants must submit an application online here by January 3rd, 2025.

 

Time Commitment

  • 1.5-2 hours per week (Jan 14 – Apr 8)
  • First Aid and CPR/AED Training
  • Monthly meetings
  • Run Club Leader Training (2 hours)

 

Description of Duties

Run Club Leaders are responsible for on-site operations of the UBC Rec Run Club including but not limited to:

  • Necessary set-up and take-down
  • Registration check-in
  • Leading pre-run warm ups
  • Leading and pacing predetermined run groups and routes
  • Reporting changes in route conditions to Rec staff
  • Participant community building
  • Waiver collection and First Aid & Incident response
  • Creating a welcome and inclusive environment
  • Attend monthly Run Club Leader meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Supervision Received

Run Club Leaders report directly to the Manager, Physical Activity and supported by the Office of Physical Activity student staff and Coordinator, Physical Activity.

 

Qualifications

Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification required (certification provided).

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

  • Enthusiastic, organized and responsible
  • Willingness to learn and teach others
  • Independent and willing to work in a team environment
  • Strong desire to be a part of a Run Club community
  • Knowledge of campus streets and roads

 

Anticipated Learning Outcomes

By April 2025, Run Club Leaders will have experience in:

  • Leadership and working with others
  • Management of time while working effectively in a team environment
  • Communication, customer service and conflict resolution skills
  • Sport administration and policy
  • Health promotion and health education
  • Inclusive physical activity programming and promotion
  • Forming new relationships on campus and connection to the UBC community

Consequence of Error/Judgment

Run Club Leaders are expected to conduct themselves and execute their designated roles and responsibilities in a respectful, timely and supportive way. Failure to deliver this in a manner that meets these standards may impact negatively on access to services, jeopardize students’ wellbeing, and result in increased risk to the University. Errors or incorrect decisions could result in direct costs, lost opportunities, impacts or delays for students, staff, faculty and the public. Damage to the department and to the University’s reputation may occur if the incumbent does not conduct themselves or their responsibilities in the expected manner.
