Intramurals: More Than Just Sports (We’re Hiring!)

University is about more than just classes—it’s about finding opportunities to connect, grow and leave your mark. That being said, UBC is such a large school, it can be intimidating to join clubs or programs without knowing what you’re getting yourself into. The Intramurals program here at UBC is a great way to make those connections, grow personally and professionally, and make a difference for the UBC community. There really is something for everyone, whether you’re interested in running one of our eleven leagues, you want to help plan some of our iconic events, or you have a passion for photography, videography and marketing, there is a space for you within the program. We’ve reached out to members of the Intramurals program to answer some important questions before you submit your application for term 2!

Why did you join Intramurals?

“My sister always talked about how amazing this program was, and I was coming off of my first year at UBC which was completely virtual and I felt lost and needed purpose.”

“I joined because I wanted to help run the iconic UBC events. I volunteered at a couple events before joining and I wanted to do more than just being an external volunteer. The people are so nice and welcoming and I wanted to be part of the community.”

“To get more involved in UBC and find a program that gives me a chance to do something with photography and digital media.”

How has IM impacted your university experience?

“I’ve gained a beautiful community and great friends. I feel like I have a place at university.”

“Honestly, it’s changed my whole university life. I’m naturally an introvert, but IM pushed me out of that box and honestly helped me gain a lot of confidence. It also pushed me to go out and have fun once in a while and enjoy my university life with a bunch of new friends!”

“I can’t imagine a university experience without IM because I’ve met the most amazing people and have enjoyed every moment organizing and participating in leagues and events. I’ve also felt a deep sense of community and belonging at UBC all thanks to IM.”

What is your favourite memory of the program?

“Retreat or formal! Or Day of the Longboat! Or league sports! Or crew socials! Ahhhhh”

“I’d have to say my time being in events and being able to look around at huge events like Day of the Longboat and feel a sense of accomplishment for the work that a relatively small group of students can achieve with dedication.”

“After the last race of Storm The Wall when the sun came out after days of rain and we were all huddled together on the mulch celebrating!”

What is one reason someone should apply for IM and what advice would you give to potential applicants?

“You should apply for IM if you resonate with the “work hard, play hard” philosophy. My advice for potential applicants would be; be brave! IM can throw you some curveballs, but there’s always going to be people around to uplift & support you, so you’ll make it through. (+ start practicing your line dancing).”

“You should apply to IM to find your community on campus. I would advise applicants to really think about your interests and make your application interesting – really think about what makes you ✨you✨.”

“There are so many opportunities to get involved within IM! Even if you are unsure or if there aren’t openings for the exact crew you want right now, submit an application anyways, there will be so many opportunities to try out different crews in future terms.”

As our student staff have suggested, joining intramurals is about being a part of an amazing program, gaining work experience, and creating a community at UBC. If our amazing student staff have inspired you to submit an application, you can do so on our website. We can’t wait to see you in term 2!
