Nordic SC January Racing Recap!

we are back.

The wait is over. UBC Nordic is BACK in action. Its time we put those 676,767 hours of training to the test. No more “later problem”. Later is NOW. The built up tension between our skis and being on a race course has settled (“finally” – our skis). Read below for alllllll the details

BC Cup 1 at Prince George, BC

FIRST RACE OF THE SEASON started off with a bang. We hopped on the plane to fly to Prince George in the early AM (forgive us but we are not about to do the 9 hour drive). We got to Caledonia Nordic to get a preski in, and then finally made it to the accom! Some delishhhh curry was whipped up, and we got some rest to prep for the races ahead. Day one was an interval start classic 7.5km, while day two came the mass start skate 10km

In both races, the podium had a bit of a bird problem… Josh and Parker came 2nd and 3rd, while Paige and Erika got 1st and 2nd, for both races! Massive shoutout to AVERY for surviving her first race weekend as a Thunderbird!

REINO KESKI-SALMI LOPPET at Salmon Arm, BC

Next, we set off to Salmon Arm for the Reino Keski-Salmi Loppet!

First stop: Blue Moose to get some coffee to fuel the caffeine addiction that none of us have… Then of course, no road trip is complete without the mandatory Pita Land stop, which single-handedly justified the 6 hour drive.

After a glorious preski, we rolled into the Beckners’ for Suzy’s famous spaghetti to fuel up for the race. and get this: there was freshly baked CARROT CAKE for dessert, not to mention the waffles and oats made for our breakfast the next morning! TDLR; we are the Beckners’ number one fans <3

The next morning came, and we each set off on either the 32 or 17km classic races. The course was fast, and some crazy times were put down. Special mention for Josh and Kate for securing podium spots and the legendary reino mugs.

Then came the main event of the weekend:

imagine you’ve just skied your lungs out for 32km.
hunger level: near starvation. cognitive function: decreasing rapidly.
erika: hypoglycaemic.
but all the sudden…you get a wiff of that smell…the smell we all know and hold near and dear to our hearts… ITS THE BEEFONABUN!!!!!!! perfectly bundled up, dripping of oniony goodness, just begging to be eaten. then you consume the entire thing in 30 seconds flat.

We were also treated to some very special ALUMNI SURPRISES from Isaac, Mykal, Maggie, and Rachel. For anyone new here, these icons basically built the team, so getting to ski with them again was equal parts humbling and nostalgic. Elite energy all around.

And if you’re wondering, yes we went to Pita Land on the way back too LOL DUH

Tuesday Night Race at Cypressssss

Since we’re certified ski try hards, of course we had to squeeze in some extra racing. This time at Cypress for the Tuesday Night Race!

This week’s event was a team skate relay (1km × 3 per partner), aka the moment our speed work training has been waiting for.

It was a super fun night, with lots of fast skiing and plenty of teams landing high up in the results. Can’t forget about the post race HOT CHOCCYYYY

Practices!!!

What about when we’re not racing? You can catch us up at WOP or Cypress getting some quality training in! This month, we were treated with some STUNNING days at both Cypress and WOP, getting some quality volume and spicy interval sessions done. Always a good time getting a reminder of why we do this. BC Cup 2: watch out
