Fitness, Therapy & Performance Classes

Fitness, Therapy & Performance classes are all ways to increase your physical activity, increase flexibility, and have fun in a low-impact setting. The UBC Aquatic Centre offers a number of programs that will fit your needs and are taught by experienced instructors.

Fitness Classes

We offer a wide variety of fitness classes that everyone from seniors to young adults can participate and benefit from. These classes are designed to get your heart rate going, but don’t involve swimming lengths. Fitness classes minimize impact on your joints, will increase your flexibility, and improve your cardiovascular endurance. Classes can take place in shallow to deep water and this is clearly identified in the description of each class.

Therapy Classes

Water exercise and therapy is one of the best ways to rebuild muscle strength, recover after an injury, or simply increase your flexibility. Through hydrostatic pressure and hydrotherapy, you’ll experience lessened impact on joints while strengthening them at the same time.

Performance Classes

If you enjoy swimming, our performance classes are aqua fitness classes that are coached to keep you motivated, provide stroke correction, and challenge you. We offer different classes for different levels so whether you’re a recreational swimmer, triathlete, provincially ranked swimmer, or somewhere in between there’s a class that will suit you.

Aqua Fitness Class Descriptions

Aqua Bootcamp | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Challenge your fitness level and improve your cardio conditioning alternating with strength, balance, and core training segments while exercising in shallow water. This class features interval training, power and propulsive moves to challenge you without the stress on the joints. This is a higher intensity Aqua Fitness class.

This is a Drop-In Aqua Fitness class offered in the Recreation Pool.

Aqua Tabata | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Based on the Tabata Protcol: A 4 Minute High Intenisty Workout made up of eight sets of 20 seconds high intensity moves followed by 10 seconds of recovery time. This program will increase your aerobic fitness and is one of our best calorie-burning classes. Get fit, de-stress and be prepared for one of the best water-workouts of your life!

This is a Drop-in class offered in the Recreation Pool.


Aqua Zumba | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Aqua Zumba is a high energy, calorie burning aqua fitness class and easy to follow exercise moves performed in shallow water to Latin music. The music and the exercise will keep you coming back for more. Get energized! Register at a discounted rate or drop-in at our regular specialty Aqua Zumba rate.

This is a Specialty Aqua Fitness class offered in the Recreation Pool. Register for a series of classes for the best rate (See "Rates and Prices" section below). Drop-in participation is possible, however, based on availability, and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Deep Water Aqua Fitness | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Improve cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, and flexibility with this no-impact, deep-water workout. Participants should be comfortable in deeper water but flotation belts are provided for each person.

This is a Drop-In Aqua Fitness class offered in the Recreation Pool.


Deep to the Core | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

This class has no impact on your joints, but it has an enormous impact on your cardiovascular system and core strength with the help of the resistance in the water! Equipment and a selection of core exercises will be used to enhance strength training and core strengthening. Flotation belts will be provided, or try exercising without the belt for a greater emphasis on core and cardiovascular conditioning. Participants must be comfortable in deep water.

This is a Drop-In Aqua Fitness class offered in the Recreation Pool.

Fit4Two Prenatal Program | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Exercising in the water is refreshing and rejuvenating during pregnancy and following birth.  All Fit4Two instructors are certified Pre and Post natal fitness specialists and follow the guidelines of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC). Par-Med-X for Pregnancy from must be signed by your health care provider (physician or midwife) prior to you participating in class. This form can be downloaded at www.fit4two.ca.

Get Wet & Sweat | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

A combination of shallow and deep water classes that focus on cardio endurance, core stabilization, strength, balance, and flexibility. You choose the depth and take it to your own personal level of exertion! Participants of all ages and levels of fitness are welcome.

This is a Drop-In Aqua Fitness class offered in the Recreation Pool.

High Energy Aqua Fitness | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Shallow water exercise to get your morning started right! This low impact, high energy challenge will improve cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, balance and core muscles.

This is a Drop-In Aqua Fitness class takes place in the Recreation Pool.


Hydro Board Fitness | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Hydro Board Fitness is a specialized Aqua Fitness class performed on floating Stand-Up Boards/Mats. Participants will work through a number of different routines while maintaining balance on Hydro Boards and constantly working their core. Get energized and don’t fall in! Register at a discounted rate or drop-in at our regular specialty Hydro Board rate.

Hydro Board Yoga | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Hydro Board Yoga is a specialized Aqua Fitness class performed on floating Stand-Up Boards/Mats. Strengthen your core muscles, find your ‘balance’ between mind, body, and soul through this Yoga class. All skill levels welcome and encouraged to practice at their own pace. Register at a discounted rate or drop-in at our regular specialty Hydro Board rate.

Parent and Baby Aquafit | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Fitness and fun for the parent and baby! Ease back into fitness and introduce your baby to the water. Your aquafit instructor will lead you through 45 minutes of cardio and muscular endurance while incorporating your baby in movements to the sound of music. Infants will safely sit in a floating mesh turtle next to the caregiver. Infants should be at least 4 months old or be able to easily support their heads.

Seniors Fitness | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Mild stretching, relaxation, balance, and core exercises on the pool deck, followed by 30 minutes of shallow water exercise performed to music. One of the best ways to stay healthy without impacting your joints!

This is a Drop-In Aqua Fitness class offered in the Recreation Pool.


Shallow Aqua Fitness | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Performed in chest-depth water with music to get you motivated and moving. This is our most popular type of Aquafitness class and for all demographics and fitness levels. Class includes muscular strength and endurance, core stability, flexibility, and more.

This is a Drop-In Aqua Fitness class offered in the Recreation Pool.

Water Running | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Join a coached water running class! This class is performed in both shallow and deep water. Participants will wear floatation belts for upright running and floatation. This class is low impact, great for exercise, resistance training and endurance.

This is a Drop-In Aqua Fitness class offered in the Leisure Pool.

Aqua Yoga | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Rekindle the connection between Mind, Body and Soul to the water in this warm-water Yoga class. Loosen muscles and joints, increase flexibility and improve balance through hydrostatic pressure and breathing techniques. Taught by a certified Yoga instructor.

This is a Drop-In Aqua Fitness class offered in the Leisure Pool.

Aqua Therapy | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Aquatic therapy exercises are performed in the warmer water. Aqua therapy can be beneficial in treating a variety of medical conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia, stroke recovery, diabetes, osteoporosis, joint pain and sports injuries. Water resistance is a gentle, but effective strengthening tool, ideal for recovery. The focus will be on low and non-weight bearing activities, mobility, easy stretching for joint flexibility and mild resistance exercises.

This is a Specialty Aqua Fitness class offered in the Leisure Pool. Register for a series of classes for the best rate (See "Rates and Prices" section below). Drop-in participation is possible, however, based on availability, and on a first-come, first-served basis.


River Walking | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise. Walking against a gentle current in the warm lazy river is even better. This form of exercise is ideal for individuals with disabilities, neuromuscular or heart disease, injuries or joint replacements. This is also a class that helps build balance and stability for the winter months. This low-impact workout is easy on the joints while the water’s resistance develops muscular and core strength, balance and conditioning. All fitness levels can participate.

This is a Drop-In Aqua Fitness class offered in the Leisure Pool.

Steam & Stretch | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Enjoy a guided stretch in our sauna focusing on back relaxation and shoulder mobility. They will then move to the steam room for a quick guided meditation where they will exhale out their worries and stress. The class will finish with stretching in the hot tub. Unwind, relax and refresh your mind and body.

No swimming experience necessary. The hot tub is a shallow depth (0.9m). Bathing suit required.

This is a Drop-In Aqua Fitness class offered in the Steam Room, Sauna, and Hot Tub.

Coached Express Workout | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Get fit during your lunch break! Improve your swim strokes and endurance through interval training and stroke drills. Great for triathletes, masters and recreational swimmers. A UBC Varsity swimmer will coach and provide training workouts, stroke correction and development instruction, breathing, flip turn and racing start techniques. Prerequisite: Must be able to swim 50m. Register at a discounted rate or drop-in at our regular specialty Coached Express rate.

This is a Specialty class offered in the Competition Pool. Register for a series of classes for the best rate (See "Rates and Prices" section below). Drop-in participation is possible, however, based on availability, and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Swim Fit | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Improve skills and endurance through distance swimming, stroke correction, and interval training. This coached-supervised program is great for the recreational swimmer who would like to improve strength, endurance, and cardiovascular training. Prerequisite: Must be able to swim 50m. Register at a discounted rate or drop-in at our regular specialty Swim Fit rate.

This is a Specialty class offered in the Competition Pool. Register for a series of classes for the best rate (See "Rates and Prices" section below). Drop-in participation is possible, however, based on availability, and on a first-come, first-served basis.


Performance Private Classes | Aqua Fitness at the UBC Aquatic Centre

These one-hour high-end private classes are coached by NCCP level coaches including UBC’s Derrick Schoof. These one-on-one classes are created on-demand to fit your (or your youth’s) busy schedule. Classes are designed for recreational, masters, triathlete and provincial level swimmers Classes focus on technique, stroke correction, speed, and include video feedback.

Rates and Prices

Classes are identified in their descriptions as either Drop-In Aqua Fitness classes, or Specialty Aqua Fitness classes which are on different pricing structures.

Participate in Drop-In Aqua Fitness Classes

Drop-In Aqua Fitness classes are included with drop-in admission, a membership pass, or free with a valid UBC Student Card. Simply use your membership or UBC Student Card to enter the facility, or pay a drop-in fee at the operations desk, and proceed into the centre for each class.

A drop-in or membership includes access to all pools, steam and sauna when available during the time of your visit, drop-in fitness and drop-in therapy classes (excluding specialty classes) and access to the change rooms and amenities.

2Pool access is free for currently registered UBC Students with their UBC Card. Each student must scan their card each visit. There is a $5.00 charge for UBC Students who do not pay Athletics & Recreation fees or don’t have their card at time of visit.
3Family rate is listed per person for one or two parent household plus their children. Minimum one paying parent and one paying child.
4Non-peak hours occur Monday to Friday between 9:00am – 11:30am, 1:30 – 5:30pm, and 8:30pm – close. Non-peak hours occur Saturday to Sunday after 6:30pm.

Do you qualify for one of these discounted memberships? All discounted memberships including those for UNA members, CSC card holders, and UBC Staff & Faculty must be purchased in-person through the front desk with a valid ID card.

5A 10 Visit Card is valid for one (1) calendar year from the date of purchase and can only be purchased in-person from the UBC Aquatic Centre operations desk.
6A 1 Month Pass is valid for one (1) calendar month from the date of purchase.
7A 4 Month Pass is valid for four (4) calendar months from the date of purchase.
8The Year Pass is valid for the period of one (1) calendar from the date of purchase.
9Closures: Aquatic facilities are complex and require regular maintenance. There will be both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance closures that will occur within the year. Facility users can anticipate scheduled maintenance closures of 3-6 weeks over any 12-month period. No refunds, partial refunds or credits will be granted due to facility closures / access restrictions.

Get in the water when your child is in lessons! You can enjoy a discounted drop-in rate of $3.50 when your child is in swimming lessons to spend time in the drop-in swim areas, steam room, sauna, and access to the amenities that are open during the time of your child’s lesson. (Regular drop-in rate is $6.75). Show up at the front desk with your registered child to receive your discounted rate!

Specialty Aqua Fitness classes require a drop-in fee or registration. Register for a series of classes for the best rate, or pay an additional specialty class drop-in fee at the operations desk upon your entry to the facility.

"Hydro Board Yoga is a specialized Aqua Fitness class performed on floating Stand-Up Boards/Mats. Strengthen your core muscles, find your ‘balance’ between mind, body, and soul through this Yoga class. All skill levels welcome and encouraged to practice at their own pace. Register at a discounted rate or drop-in at our regular specialty Hydro Board rate.

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise. Walking against a gentle current in the warm lazy river is even better. A specialized instructor will lead you through various movements to rebuild muscle, build balance and work on regaining strength. This form of exercise is ideal for individuals with disabilities, neuromuscular or heart disease, injuries or joint replacements. This class is a great way to help build balance. All fitness levels can participate. Register for a discounted rate, or you may drop-in, space permitting.

Improve swimming skills, ability and endurance through distance swimming, stroke correction and interval training. Must be able to swim 100m continuously and at least 2 of the following strokes: front crawl, back stroke or butterfly. This program is great for the recreational swimmer who would like to improve strength, endurance and cardiovascular conditioning.
