Become a detective, be a linguist! Through a mix of indoor and outdoor activities led by UBC Linguistics students, our goal is for campers to develop critical thinking and have fun with languages. Activities vary from learning secret languages, to searching for clues around UBC campus. All their training and challenges will prepare each camper for their final quest: to discover the biggest secret... all languages are mysterious and beautiful in their own ways!
In this camp, campers will:
• Be exposed to new languages from around the world
• Be challenged to find patterns in languages
• Play outdoor games, design posters and engage in arts and crafts
• Learn about the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) and use those tools to explore speech sciences
• Learn ‘secret’ languages such including morse code, cipher wheels, and more
• At the end of the week, campers will solves a series of clues through a scavenger hunt from the new languages learned
Goals:
• Practice critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Enjoy a glimpse to the field of linguistics and speech sciences
• Increase interest in other languages!
• Above all, campers are going to have fun!

Prerequisites: Campers must speak, read and write fluently in English.
Required Equipment: This is an outdoor camp so dress for the weather; bring a hat and sunscreen.

A digital copy of the consent form is completed during online registration. In-person or over the phone registration requires a paper copy be submitted prior to the first day of camp.
