Sailing – Basic Cruising Standard

Program provided in partnership with MacSailing

Youth Basic Cruising Standard is designed for teens ages 14–18 who want to build real cruising skills and grow into confident, capable sailors. Sailors work as part of a crew on a keelboat, developing seamanship, teamwork, and decision-making through hands-on learning and shared responsibility on the water.

This program focuses on skill development over time, with sailors taking on increasing responsibility as their confidence and competence grow. Emphasis is placed on real onboard experience, including boat handling, navigation awareness, and crew leadership, rather than rushing certification.

Sailors may earn Sail Canada Basic Crew or Basic Cruising certification when readiness is demonstrated on the water.

Highlights Include:
Helming, sail trim, and boat handling in real conditions
Docking fundamentals, anchoring basics, and safe engine procedures
Navigation awareness, trip planning, and onboard decision-making
Strong focus on teamwork, communication, and leadership
Small-group instruction with shared crew roles onboard

Prerequisites: Completion of Junior Cruiser, CANSail 2, or equivalent keelboat sailing experience, as confirmed by MacSailing staff.
