Program provided in partnership with UBC Chan Centre for the Performing Arts
Foster your child’s interest in symphonic music! This camp will help young audiences be curious about the symphony by exploring different aspects of music: rhythm, sound, colours, and contrasts in dynamic and related emotions. Each aspect will be explored through hands-on activities and movement through song and dance. Campers will experience the fundamental pillars of symphonic music in a fun, tangible manner that makes music such as Mozart's symphony n.39 and Beethoven's symphony n.5 accessible.
About the Instructors:
Laura Trainini is a UBC School of Music DMA candidate
and mom of Leo, 8 years old. Laura spent 10 years travelling around the
world to pursue her dream of being an orchestral player (Europe, Mexico,
China). In the meantime, she taught music education, flute and music
group classes to several dozens of little musicians coming from
different cultures and languages. She has experience leading youth
instrumental groups and teaching music group classes, skills that she
has polished during her five years as a music teacher in a middle
school. Laura privileges an embodied approach to her music teaching
based on rhythm and movement, where children can express themselves and
their relationship with music through playing and self-discovery.
Natasha Damiano is a PhD candidate in the UBC
Rehabilitation Sciences program, and a student member of the Music and
Health Research Institute’s Training and Mentoring group (U. of Ottawa).
Supported by a three-year SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship, her research uses
narrative and arts-based methods to examine ‘musicking’ from the
perspective of Occupational Science. The study is in partnership with
St. James Music Academy, where she has also volunteered since September
2021. Natasha brings to this research a background in Anthropology (MA,
BA) and a diverse set of music experiences including personal music
participation (choir, guitar, ukulele), volunteering in educational and
therapeutic music contexts, playing in ukulele circles, and leading a
Girl Guide group in Steveston’s Songs in the Snow (2019). A parent
herself, Natasha aspires to help learners with a wide range of
capabilities find their “voice” in music, and draw on it for their own
wellbeing.
