UBC Athletics & Recreation is beginning to safely re-open our sport facilities and re-start our programs. As of July 13, most UBC Sport Facilities including the UBC Aquatic Centre and the BirdCoop Fitness Centre will be re-opened with limited or reduced activities to accommodate the guidelines and recommendations of local health authorities.

As additional facilities re-open and new programs are offered, updates will be shared. Below you will find the most up-to-date information about what’s open, available programs, and the safety changes made to address COVID-19 concerns.

Facility & Program Updates

UBC Camps

Beginning July 6, UBC Camps will resume operation with the following activities: field sports, off-ice hockey, ball; and tennis camps. Early registration will be available to UBC faculty and staff beginning at 9:00am on June 25 through June 28.

Fitness Centres & Classes

Beginning July 13, the BirdCoop Fitness Centre will re-open. Outdoor boot camps, yoga classes, and personal training are also available. The Arc Fitness Centre will re-open on July 20. Advanced registration is required.

UBC Aquatic Centre

UBC Aquatic Centre memberships will be available for purchase on August 4, at 12:00pm. The UBC Aquatic Centre is open with limited hours and reduced activities. Length swim, recreation swim, swimming lessons, private lessons, performance private coaching, and aqua fitness classes are available at this time. Advanced registration is required. Facility access is by appointment only.


UBC Tennis Centre & Tennis Activities

Beginning June 29, the UBC Tennis Centre will re-open with limited hours for court bookings and private lessons. Reservations required.

SRC Drop-in Sports & Activities

Beginning June 29, the SRC will re-open with limited hours for table tennis and badminton. Reservations required.

John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse & Rowing Activities

John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse will re-open on Monday, June 29 with limited programs. Registration required.


Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre & Hockey/Skating Activities

Beginning June 24, the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre will re-open with limited hours for off-ice private lessons.

UBC Baseball Rose Indoor Training Centre & Baseball Activities

Beginning June 24, the UBC Baseball Rose Indoor Training centre will re-open with limited hours for private lessons.

Thunderbird Park, Rashpal Dhillon Track & Field, MacInnes Family Field

Some fields and outdoor spaces are available for informal activity and recreation among members of a single household. Please practice safe distancing measures and observe the posted signs.


Facility Closures

The following facilities are closed for all activities, including rentals:

  • War Memorial Gymnasium
  • Gerald McGavin Rugby Pavilion

 

Safety Practices

Stay at home if you are sick

Stay home if you have travelled internationally in the last 14 days

Advanced reservations and bookings required for all programs/activities.

Signs and pathways for designated entrances, exits, line-ups, and traffic throughout buildings

Enhanced cleaning is in effect

Change rooms & lockers closed. Come dressed for your activity.

Water fountains are limited to refilling of water bottles.

Cover your cough or sneeze with your elbow

Avoid touching your face

Wash hands thoroughly & frequently

Use hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands

Maintain a physical distance of 2m from others

Additional Information

  • Physical distancing will be practiced whenever possible, including: maintaining distance between staff and participants.
  • Rentals and shared equipment are unavailable or limited. Please bring your own equipment for activities.
  • In-person purchases or transactions are cashless and only credit (Mastercard or Visa) or debit is accepted.
  • Wearing a mask at is a personal choice, and while not required, guests are welcome to wear one/

Daily Health Screening

All persons visiting UBC facilities or taking part in a program must be able to answer “no” to all of the following questions:

Have you, or members of your household, experienced any flu-like or cold symptoms within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or is awaiting COVID-19 test results within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, travelled internationally within the last 14 days, including to the USA?

  • If the answer is “yes” to any question on arrival, they will not be allowed to attend any programs for health and safety reasons. A supervisor will follow-up with them through phone or email to issue a credit for programs that are missed.
  • Translated written copies of pre-screening questions will be available to ensure language is not a barrier to understanding and adherence to health and safety measures.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

UBC Athletics & Recreation is working on a plan to safely re-open our sport facilities and re-start our programs. We are working through modifications and new practices that will adhere to the guidelines and recommendations of local health authorities. Although we do not have a precise timeline, we expect that we will re-open through a phased approach that provides recreation opportunities while enacting the appropriate precautions.

UBC Athletics & Recreation is also reviewing refunds and credits to anyone registered for classes, memberships, and rentals during this period. Communication about refunds and credits will be communicated to affected individuals via email.

Please note, individuals with expiring locker rentals at the SRC and ARC will not be required to vacate them during this extended closure. An automatic extension will be provided to all locker rentals until August 31, 2020. If you require access to remove items from your locker, please contact info.recreation@ubc.ca.
