Due to the March 29 revised Provincial Health Order that continues the suspension of adult sport activities and cancels adult indoor group fitness through April 19, the following programs are currently unavailable: Yoga & Pilates; Cardio, Conditioning & Strength classes (Zumba, Barre Fitness, & Women on Weights); Martial Arts; Dance; Boot camps; Group Fitness classes; and Spin classes.

Outdoor Boot Camp classes continue to run.

The ARC & BirdCoop Fitness Centres are open with reduced capacity to those with memberships. Personal training is also available at this time.

Everyone is reminded to show up dressed for activity; areas to change are limited.

Advanced registration is required for all activities. As a result of the newest Provincial guidelines relating to indoor individual exercise, effective immediately all patrons are required to wear non-medical face masks at all times.

Things to Know

  1. COVID-19 Safety
    • All fitness centre workouts & classes require advanced, online registration.
      • Access to fitness facilities is limited to registered persons.
      • Fitness centre and class capacity is limited per time slot/class to allow for distancing.
    • Signs and directions are posted throughout the facility to guide traffic flow and queueing spots.
    • Spotting, working out in partners/groups, or working in with other members are not allowed at this time.
    • All members should continue to arrive changed and ready to workout whenever possible; as change areas will be limited. 
    • Fitness Centre Workouts
      • All members will receive a cleaning spray bottle to use during their workout, and are required to clean their equipment before and after each use.
      • Areas (pods) within the fitness centre free weight & stretching areas will be designated for individual workouts.
        • Pods will maintain a 2.5m x 2.5m distance to allow for social distancing. 
    • Fitness Classes
      • Participants will be assigned a stationary workstation pod that are 3×3 metres to maintain social distancing during the class or session.
  1. Arriving & Signing-In
    • Please arrive no sooner than 10 minutes before your booked workout session, as late arrivals will not be permitted inside.
    • BirdCoop arrivals will queue at the north doors of the SRC before their workout.
    • ARC arrivals will queue at the east doors of the Life Building facing the Aquatic Centre
    • Anyone needing accessible entry will be taken down to the ARC via the elevator.
  1. Amenities
    • Washrooms and workout lockers at the SRC and ARC, and ARC change rooms are available with restrictions and limited capacities.
    • Showers at the ARC and SRC, and SRC change areas are currently closed. 
    • Members are to adhere to all directional signage, time limits and capacity limits in the change areas and showers.
      • ARC Men’s and Women’s area – 2 change closets are available, with a maximum of 6 people in each change area and washroom, combined.
      • ARC universal change area – 8 change closets will be available. There are no shower facilities available at this time. 
    • Showers have closed based on current Provincial Health Orders and Guidelines re-opened with limited capacities; guests are encouraged to shower at home when possible.  
    • Members must bring their own personal lock for locker use during their workout (locks will not be provided), and are responsible for removing the contents and lock immediately after their activity has concluded. 
      • Lockers will be assigned to fitness centre users on a first-come, first-serve basis
      • 25 short term lockers will be available for use in the SRC.
      • 30 short term lockers will be available for use in the ARC.
      • The facility and Department of Athletics and Recreation are not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
    • All water fountains are closed. If needed, please refill your water bottle at a tap in a washroom.
  1. Equipment
    • Not all equipment or machines will be available to allow for distancing.
    • For full information and details on the new equipment policies please review the BirdCoop and ARC Policies, Rules, and Gym Etiquette.
    • Participants are welcome to bring their own towels, yoga mats, personal water bottles, but are not allowed to share equipment with others.
    • No shared equipment will be provided for yoga & Pilates classes.

Registration

UBC Recreation is using a new registration system beginning May 2020; an online login will be required for all activities. If you have not recently set up a new login, please follow the link below to set up a new online login.

UBC Students – please ensure that you have activated your login using your CWL in order to qualify for student rates and free access to the UBC Aquatic Centre and SRC drop-in activities.

ARC & BirdCoop Fitness Centres

  • Advanced registration is required for all workouts; on-site registration is not available.
    • Online registration for each workout time slot is available two days in advanced at 12:00pm (for morning sessions) & 6:00pm (for all afternoon & evening sessions).
  • Members are limited to one (1) 60-minute or 75-minute workout booking per day.
  • Please bring your UBC ID card or government issued ID
  • Capacity: 23 people in the BirdCoop, and 33 people in the ARC per workout session. 
  • Members are asked to review the BirdCoop and ARC Policies, Rules, and Gym Etiquette prior to their workout.
  • Check out our Welcome Back to the ARC Fitness Centre or BirdCoop Fitness Centre video to familiarize yourself with the new layout.

Fitness Classes

  • Advanced registration is required for all classes; on-site registration is not available.
    • Online registration for each class is available 24-hours in advance of the class start time.
  • Online registration can be paid for:
    • With a non-student fitness centre membership (no additional charge for classes; online registration is still required).
    • 5 class/visit pass. Registration in each class will automatically deduct a visit from the pass.
    • With a Yoga & Pilates membership (no additional charge for classes; online registration is still required).
    • Individual session registration. Pay per class when registering online.

Additional Information and Policies – Fitness Classes & Fitness Centres

  • UBC Recreation has a three strike policy for no shows and double bookings within a 24 hour period for the Fitness Centres & Classes. After three strikes the registered account will be frozen, and unable to book a time slot for the a one-week period.
  • If you are unable to attend your registered session, please phone the Student Recreation Centre or ARC to cancel at 604-822-6000 or email src.operations@ubc.ca. Cancellations via phone are accepted up until one hour from the registered time slot, email cancellations will only be accepted 24 hours or more in advance of the registered session start time.
  • Please note that UBC Recreation may change the fitness or workout schedule at any time without notice.
  • Registration is limited to one class/session per day for each individual.
  • Refunds will not be issued for customer no-shows or cancellations.

Safety Practices

Stay at home if you are sick

Stay home if you have travelled internationally in the last 14 days

Signs and pathways for designated entrances, exits, line-ups, and traffic throughout buildings

Not all change rooms & lockers are available. Come dressed for your activity.

Water fountains are limited to refilling of water bottles

Cover your cough or sneeze with your elbow

Avoid touching your face

Wash hands thoroughly & frequently

Use hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands

Maintain a physical distance of 2m from others

Additional Information

  • Physical distancing will be practiced whenever possible, including: maintaining distance between staff and participants.
  • Visitors are required to wear non-medical masks or face coverings when indoors at UBC Sport Facilities
    • Exemptions include:
      • Persons with an underlying medical condition or disability which impacts the ability to wear a face covering
      • Children five years of age or younger are not required to wear a mask, although children over the age of two years should do so if possible.
      • Persons unable to place or remove a face covering without assistance
    • Requests for exemptions and questions can be sent to info.recreation@ubc.ca
    • Additional information is available on how to wear, use, and store your face covering
  • Rentals and shared equipment are unavailable or limited. Please bring your own equipment for activities.
  • In-person purchases or transactions are cashless and only credit (Mastercard or Visa) or debit is accepted.

What to Expect

ARC & BirdCoop Fitness Centres & Fitness Classes 

  • Additional capacity restrictions will be in place for areas such as free weights, stretching/functional area, platforms and squat racks.
  • Hand sanitizer stations are located throughout the fitness centre. 
  • Staff will perform additional cleaning of equipment during the 30-minute shut-down between workout sessions.
  • Every other piece of cardio equipment will be closed to allow for physical distancing.
  • Certain small equipment such as dip belts, weight belts, ankle straps, and wrist straps will not be available due to the difficulty in cleaning and sanitizing. Should you require any of these items, please feel free to bring your own.
  • Other small equipment such as foam rollers, bands, skipping ropes, bar pads, etc. will be limited in number to ensure proper cleaning and sanitizing between workouts.
  • Bar collars/clips will be removed from the floor but can be requested from the Floor Staff for use.
  • Chalk for use on the platforms and racks will not be provided. Members can bring their own supply of chalk to use.
  • The scale will be removed from the fitness centre.
  • Fitness classes – participants are required to stay in their assigned stationary workstation pod, as pods will enforce social distancing between participants and staff.

Daily Health Screening

All persons visiting UBC facilities or taking part in a program must be able to answer “no” to all of the following questions:

Have you, or members of your household, experienced any flu-like or cold symptoms within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or is awaiting COVID-19 test results within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, travelled internationally within the last 14 days, including to the USA?

  • If the answer is “yes” to any question on arrival, they will not be allowed to attend any programs for health and safety reasons. A supervisor will follow-up with them through phone or email to issue a credit for programs that are missed.
  • Translated written copies of pre-screening questions will be available to ensure language is not a barrier to understanding and adherence to health and safety measures.
