Things to Know

Fitness Classes – Yoga & Boot Camps

  1. COVID-19 Safety Practices
    • All classes, boot camps, and personal training sessions have moved outdoors to MacInnes Family Field.
    • All participants will be assigned a stationary workstation pod, that is 3×3 metres to maintain social distancing.
    • There will be designated laneways marked on the field with way-finding to show participants where to walk. 
  2. Registration 
    • Purchase a membership and save! Summer all-access and term memberships are available for purchase online. 
    • Participants are required to pre-register for boot camps and yoga classes; on-site registration is not available.
    • Registration is limited to one booking per day for each individual.
    • Possible cancellations due to weather will be determined 2 hours before the class, and participants will be notified by e-mail if classes or sessions are cancelled.
  3. Equipment
    • All boot camp and yoga classes will be instructed without equipment, including yoga mats. 
    • Participants are welcome to bring their own towels and yoga mats, but are not allowed to share equipment with others.
    • All classes and sessions are held outside; please prepare accordingly. 
  4. Amenities
    • No washroom or change room access is available for for participants of outdoor fitness classes.
  5. Class Capacity
    • Class size has been limited to 10 people per class.  
  6. Arriving & Signing-In
    • Participants should arrive at MacInnes Family Field 10 minutes prior to the start of their class or session to allow for sign-in and Covid-19 pre-screen questions, as late arrivals will not be permitted access to the registered program.

BirdCoop Fitness Centre

  1. COVID-19 Safety Practices
    • Each member will receive a cleaning spray bottle to use during their workout
      • Members are required to clean their equipment before and after each use
    • Areas (“pods”) within the fitness centre free weight & stretching areas will be designated for individual workouts
    • Spotting, working out in partners/groups, or working in with other members are not allowed at this time.
    • Signs and directions are posted throughout the facility to guide traffic flow and queueing spots.

    • Maximum of 20 people per workout session. 
    • Additional restrictions will be in place for areas such as free weights, stretching area, platforms and squat racks.
  4. Amenities
    • SRC washrooms will be open, but change rooms, lockers, and water fountains will not be available. 
    • Small bags will be permitted into the fitness centre while lockers are unavailable.
    • The BirdCoop Climbing Cave will be closed until further notice.
  5. Equipment
    • Not all equipment or machines will be available in order to allow for distancing.
    • Certain small equipment items will be limited or unavailable at this time. 
    • Bar collars/clips can be requested from the staff for use during workouts.

  6. Arriving & Signing-In
    • Please arrive no sooner than 10 minutes before your booked workout session, as late arrivals will not be permitted inside.
    • Due to closure of change rooms, members should arrive ready to workout.

Registration

UBC Recreation is using a new registration system beginning May 2020; an online login will be required for all activities. If you have not recently set up a new login, please follow the link below to set up a new online login.

Memberships

Purchase a membership and save! Summer all-access and term memberships are now available for purchase online. 

Through August 31, 2020 all fitness centre memberships will include access to classes and fitness centre. For information on available memberships and rates, please follow the link below:

Fitness Classes – Yoga & Boot Camps

  • Advanced registration is required for all classes; on-site registration is not available.
    • Online registration for each class is available 24-hours prior.
  • Online registrations can be paid for:
    • With a fitness centre membership (no additional charge for classes; online registration is still required)
    • 5 class/visit pass. Registration in each class will automatically deduct a visit from the pass.
    • Individual session registration. Pay per class when registering online
  • All boot camps and classes have moved outdoors to MacInnes Family Field.

BirdCoop Fitness Centre

At this time, the BirdCoop Fitness Centre will open on July 13 with reduced capacity. The ARC Fitness Centre is currently closed; when it reopens the following changes will be in effect.

  • Advanced registration is required for all workouts; on-site registration is not available.
    • Online registration for each workout time slot is available 24-hours prior.
  • Members are limited to one (1) 75-minute workout booking per day.
  • Please bring your UBC ID card or government issued ID
  • Members are asked to review the BirdCoop and ARC Policies, Rules, and Gym Etiquette prior to their workout.

Additional Information and Policies – Fitness Classes & BirdCoop Fitness Centre
  • Please note that UBC Recreation may change the fitness or workout schedule at any time without notice.
  • Cancellations for outdoor programs due to inclement weather may occur up to 2-hours before class start time. Registered individuals will be notified by e-mail of cancellations.
  • Please only book classes/sessions you are able to attend; repeat offences are subject to a 1-month membership suspension.
  • Registration is limited to one class/session per day for each individual.
  • Refunds will not be issued for customer no-shows or cancellations.

Personal Training

Personal training sessions will resume on July 6. Existing clients will be contacted by their personal trainer or can email fitness.programs@ubc.ca to resume their program.

New clients are currently being accepted. Please complete the personal training interest form.

Additional Information – Personal Training
  • All personal training sessions have moved outdoors to MacInnes Family Field.
  • All personal training sessions must be scheduled 72 hours in advance.
  • Re-schedules and refunds are not available within 24 hours of a scheduled session.
  • All personal training sessions will be one-on-one.

  • Masks are encouraged to use during fitness classes.

What to Expect

Fitness Classes – Yoga & Boot Camps

Arriving/Exiting the Facility & Sign-In/Sign-Out
  • Participants should arrive at MacInnes Family Field 10 minutes prior to the start of their class or session to allow for sign-in and Covid-19 pre-screen questions, as late arrivals will not be permitted access to the registered program.
  • When arriving at McInnes Family Field participants should look for the UBC Recreation flags to identify where the class is taking place, and should follow the marked pathway.
  • When signing-in you will be assigned a colour coded stationary workstation pod, in which participants must remain in for the entirety of the class.
  • Participants are advised to arrive ready to workout, and will be required to bring all belongings to their stationary workstation pods.
  • At the end of the class or session, the instructor will dismiss participants in a staggered ordered through the marked traffic laneways. 
Required Equipment
  • All boot camp and yoga classes will be instructed without equipment, including yoga mats. 
  • Participants are welcome to bring their own towels and yoga mats, but are not allowed to share equipment with others.
  • All classes and sessions are held outside; please prepare accordingly. 
Available Amenities 
  • SRC & ARC will not have washroom/change-room access for participants participating in outdoor fitness classes.
  • The AMS Nest will be open, and will have washroom and water fountain access. Please check the AMS Nest hours prior to going, as hours may fluctuate.

BirdCoop Fitness Centre

Arriving/Exiting the Facility & Sign-In/Sign-Out
  • Members should arrive at the SRC 10 minutes prior to the start of their workout session to allow for sign-in and Covid-19 pre-screen questions.
  • The SRC doors will not open until 10 minutes before each workout session.
  • Participants are advised and encouraged to arrive ready to workout as there will be no change room or locker access.
  • Members will exit the BirdCoop through the turnstile gate, turn right down the hallway, and exit the SRC through the west facing doors.
Cleaning Equipment Protocol
  • Upon entering the BirdCoop, members will receive a personal cleaning spray bottle for their workout.
  • Members are required to clean each piece of equipment before and after use.
  • There is paper towel throughout the fitness centre to use for cleaning.
  • When a member is finished their workout, they will return their cleaning spray bottle to the front desk to be sanitized for the next workout session.
  • Staff will perform additional cleaning of equipment during the 45-minute shut-down between workout sessions.
Available Amenities
  • The SRC will have washroom access, but no change-room or locker access at this time so please come prepared. 
  • All water fountains will be closed. If needed, please refill your water bottle at a tap in a washroom.
  • Members are encouraged to bring their own towel and personal water bottle.
  • As there is no lockers, small bags will be permitted in the BirdCoop. Please keep your belongings with you at all times.

Daily Health Screening

All persons visiting UBC facilities or taking part in a program must be able to answer “no” to all of the following questions:

Have you, or members of your household, experienced any flu-like or cold symptoms within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or is awaiting COVID-19 test results within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, travelled internationally within the last 14 days, including to the USA?

  • If the answer is “yes” to any question on arrival, they will not be allowed to attend any programs for health and safety reasons. A supervisor will follow-up with them through phone or email to issue a credit for programs that are missed.
  • Translated written copies of pre-screening questions will be available to ensure language is not a barrier to understanding and adherence to health and safety measures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hours may change later in the summer. An announcement will be made if this is the case.

The SRC & ARC will not have washroom/change-room access at this time, but the AMS Nest will be open, and will have washroom and water fountain access. Please check hours of operation for the AMS Nest, as hours may change without notice.

UBC Recreation is following the guidelines set out by regional health authorities in regarding the use of face masks. At this time, the wearing of a face mask is not required to participate. Participants may make their own decision on whether to provide a face mask for their child.
