Due to the extension of Provincial Health Orders through February 5, the following programs are suspended:

  • Drop-in stick & puck
  • Adult hockey & skating lessons

The start of the 2021 Winter Thunderbird Adult Hockey League is delayed pending an update to health orders.

Youth skating and hockey lessons continue to run.

The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre is open only for registered programs or by appointment only.

Things to Know

    1. Off-ice Private Lessons
      • All lessons are available for one-on-one instruction.
      • Available lessons include stickhandling and/or shooting.
    2. Drop-In Sessions 
      • Available drop-in sessions are Figure Skating and Stick and Puck.
      • Ice times will be 1 hour and 15 minutes long.
      • All participants must arrive at the facility 20 minutes before the designated ice time. Late arrivals will not be admitted into the facility.
      • After the sign-in procedure, participants must stay in designated change rooms until the start of their ice session.
      • Stick and Puck: No goalies, games, scrimmages or training devices are allowed onto the Ice.
      • Figure Skating: No pairs or partner skating allowed during the session.
    3. Registration
      • Advanced online registration is required for all programs. On-site registration is not available.
      • Persons interested in off-ice private & semi-private lessons:

      • Persons interested in drop-in sessions for figure skating or stuck and puck:

  1. COVID safety practices
    • Masks are mandatory while in the facility until you are permitted onto the ice surface.
    • Waivers will be completed online prior to the start of your program.
    • No rental equipment and pro shop services will be available including sales of laces, tape, skate rents and skate sharpening service.
    • Participants must provide their own hockey-related equipment (ex. hockey sticks, gloves, etc.).
      • Shared equipment (ex. medicine balls, cones etc.) required for a private lesson will be sanitized between sessions.
    • For each private lesson, a single spectator is permitted to observe from the venue seating area.
  2. Arrival & Departure
    • Entry for all programs will be through the north entrance (along Thunderbird Boulevard) of the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
      • Please arrive no earlier than 20 minutes before the scheduled start time of your program.
    • All participants must leave 10 minutes after the end of their program through designated exits. Exit of the facility will be at the west entrance adjacent to the flat, parking lot between the Osborne Centre and Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
  3. Amenities
    • No water bottle fill stations, shower facilities or washrooms located in the change rooms will be available.

Registration

UBC Recreation is using a new registration system beginning May 2020; an online login will be required for all activities. If you have not recently set up a new login, please follow the link below to set up a new online login.

UBC Students – please ensure that you have activated your login using your CWL in order to qualify for student rates and free access to the UBC Aquatic Centre and SRC drop-in activities.

Off-Ice Private lessons

  • Lessons must be booked three days in advance.
  • Once you have completed 5 private lessons, you will be required to purchase another 5-pass membership if you wish to continue.
  • Off-Ice Hockey Lessons will take place on our Off-Ice shooting range and dry-floor space. Lessons will be tailored to your individual needs.

    • Phone registration is available at (604) 822-6121.
    • In-person registration will not be available.
  • Only credit (Visa or Mastercard) or debit payment is accepted at this time.
  • Credit or refund will be issued upon request for individuals unable to attend lessons for a COVID-19 related reason.

Maintain a physical distance of 2m from others

Additional Information

  • Masks are mandatory while in the facility until you are permitted onto the ice surface.
  • Physical distancing will be practiced whenever possible, including: maintaining distance between staff and participants with emphasis on avoiding contact with younger children
  • Good hand hygiene practices will be encouraged, including regular hand washing (1-1.5 hour intervals) with soap and water or hand sanitizer when there is no immediate access to soap and water.
  • Enhanced cleaning is taking place in all of our facilities, including: increased frequency, additional attention to high frequency touch points, and daily sanitization of furniture
  • If staff are required to administer first aid, they will wear personal protective equipment (PPE) that may include medical gloves, a mask, face shield, and a gown
  • Public changerooms may be closed or modified to facilitate physical distancing.
  • Public water fountains may be closed for drinking, although some may remain open for contactless water bottle refills. It is expected that individuals arrive to programs with a filled water bottle that is labelled with their name.
  • Facilities will have designated entrance and exit foot traffic patterns that all staff and participants must abide by.

What to Expect

Arrival & Departure

  • All participants must leave 10 minutes after their ice time ends through designated exits. Exit of the facility will be at the west entrance adjacent to the flat, parking lot between the Osborne Centre and Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
Off-Ice Private Lessons
  • Please arrive no earlier than 25 minutes before the scheduled start time of the lesson. The arena is locked at all times so the instructor will come out to meet you. 
  • For each private lesson, a single spectator is permitted to observe from the venue seating area. 
  • If not accompanying your child to a private lesson. Parents should wait at the designated exit for the instructor to accompany their child at the conclusion of the lesson.
Required Equipment
  • Participants must bring their own hockey stick, helmet, gloves, workout attire, towel and water bottle.
  • Equipment such as medicine balls, pucks and reaction balls will be shared between the participant and instructor. This will be sanitized following each lesson.
Drop-In Hockey & Skating 
  • All participants must arrive at the facility 20 minutes before the designated time. Late arrivals will not be admitted into the facility. 
  • Participants must stay in change rooms until designated ice time. 
  • All participants must leave 10 minutes after their ice time ends through designated exits.

Stick & Puck 
  • Participants must provide their own helmets, skates and gloves, sticks and pucks, which are mandatory for participation. No rental equipment and pro shop services are available at this time. 
  • No goalies, games, scrimmages or training devices are allowed onto the ice. 
Figure Skating
  • Participants must provide their own figure skates, which are mandatory for participations. No rental equipment and pro shop services are available at this time. 
  • No pairs or partner skating is allowed at this time.

Daily Health Screening

All persons visiting UBC facilities or taking part in a program must be able to answer “no” to all of the following questions:

Have you, or members of your household, experienced any flu-like or cold symptoms within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or is awaiting COVID-19 test results within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, travelled internationally within the last 14 days, including to the USA?

  • If the answer is “yes” to any question on arrival, they will not be allowed to attend any programs for health and safety reasons. A supervisor will follow-up with them through phone or email to issue a credit for programs that are missed.
  • Translated written copies of pre-screening questions will be available to ensure language is not a barrier to understanding and adherence to health and safety measures.
