Things to Know

  1. Registration 
    • Participants are now required to pre-register for all drop-in sports; on-site registration is not available.
    • Registration is limited to one drop-in session per day for each individual.
    • Registration opens 24 hours before the start of each session time.
    • Each participant is to register individually, group registrations are not permitted.
  2. Equipment
    • Participants will be required to bring their own sporting equipment as there will be no equipment available for rentals.
    • There will be table tennis balls and birdies for sale at the sign-in desk that will vary in colour to ensure there is no cross contamination during play. See available equipment
  3. Drop-in Capacity
    • The SRC gymnasiums have a limit of 16 individuals allowed in it at one time during drop-in.

  1. Drop-in Structure
    • Drop-in sessions are one hour long, with a 15 minute cleaning break in between.
    • Only one versus one play is allowed, no doubles play.
  2. Entering/Exiting the Facility
    • The SRC will have designated laneways in which you will need to follow when entering and exiting the facility.
    • Participants will enter the SRC through the North doors. 
  3. Amenities
    • SRC washrooms will be open, but lockers and showers will be closed. 

Registration

UBC Recreation is using a new registration system beginning May 2020; an online login will be required for all activities. If you have not recently set up a new login, please follow the link below to set up a new online login.

How to Register

  • Drop-in activities at the Student Recreation Centre are free of charge for UBC Students, UBC Faculty & Staff, CSC or UNA Card members
    • All other participants are required to pay a fee of $6.00 per session
    • All participants must register online regardless of their affiliation. 
  • CSC and UNA Card members are required to verify their affiliation prior to qualifying for discounted rates. 
  • Registration is limited to one drop-in session per day for each individual.
  • Registration opens 24 hours before the start of each session time.
  • Participants who live in the same household are encouraged to register to play against one another whenever possible. 
  • Each participant is to register individually, group registrations are not permitted.

Stay at home if you are sick

Signs and pathways for designated entrances, exits, line-ups, and traffic throughout buildings

Additional Information

  • Participants are required to stay at their assigned court during play, and are not allowed to change courts or playing partners.
  • Participants are to not touch other players table tennis balls or birdies, but instead use their racquet to roll/scoop their partners birdie back to them.
  • Each participant will have a coloured or marked birdie/ball to identify which is theirs, and those are the only birdies/balls they are allowed to touch.
  • Physical distancing will be practiced whenever possible, including: maintaining distance between staff and participants.
  • Wearing a mask is a personal choice, and while not required, guests are welcome to wear one.

Capacity

  • The SRC gymnasiums have a limit of 16 individuals allowed in it at one time during drop-in.
  • Gym 1 = 4 people (Badminton)
  • Gym 2 = 4 people (Badminton)
  • Gym 3 = 8 people (Table Tennis)
  • Only one versus one play is allowed, no doubles play.

What to Expect

Arriving/Exiting the Facility & Sign-In/Sign-Out

  • Participants should arrive at the SRC 10 minutes prior to their registered session and line up at the North side entrance (directly across from Walter Gage Residence).
  • Doors open 10 minutes prior to the session time, please arrive early to allow for Covid-19 pre-screen questions and sign-in.
  • Participants will check in with SRC Operations staff to verify their time slot and playing partner upon entering. 
  • When signing-in you will: be assigned a court number to play on, complete the Covid-19 pre-screen questions, have your balls/birdies colour marked, sign a paper waiver, and have the option to purchase a pair of birdies or table tennis balls at the sign-in desk.
  • Once the sign-in is complete participants can proceed to the appropriate court number with the assistance of an operations staff. 
  • When exiting the facility, you will exit through the North doors of the SRC gymnasium.
  • Participants are not able to exit back through the SRC.

Required Equipment

  • Participants will be required to bring their own sporting equipment such as: racquets, paddles, table tennis balls, birdies, ect…
  • There will be no equipment available for rentals, but there will be table tennis balls and birdies for sale at the sign-in desk that will vary in colour to ensure there is no cross contamination during play. 
  • In-person purchases or transactions are cashless and only credit (Mastercard or Visa) or debit is accepted.

Available Amenities 

  • SRC Washrooms will be open, but lockers and showers will be closed.
  • The second floor washrooms will be open for drop-in use.
  • Participants are advised to arrive ready to play/dressed, and will be required to bring all belongings to the courts.
  • Please note there will be no benches or seating area in the gymnasium at this time.
  • Public water fountains may be closed for drinking, although some may remain open for contactless water bottle refills. 

Daily Health Screening

All persons visiting UBC facilities or taking part in a program must be able to answer “no” to all of the following questions:

Have you, or members of your household, experienced any flu-like or cold symptoms within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or is awaiting COVID-19 test results within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, travelled internationally within the last 14 days, including to the USA?

  • If the answer is “yes” to any question on arrival, they will not be allowed to attend any programs for health and safety reasons. A supervisor will follow-up with them through phone or email to issue a credit for programs that are missed.
  • Translated written copies of pre-screening questions will be available to ensure language is not a barrier to understanding and adherence to health and safety measures.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

UBC Athletics & Recreation is working on a plan to safely re-open our fitness centres. We are working through modifications and new practices that will adhere to the guidelines and recommendations of local health authorities. Although we do not have a precise timeline, we expect that we will re-open through a phased approach that provides recreation opportunities while enacting the appropriate precautions.

SRC washrooms will be open, but lockers and showers will be closed. There will be limited water fountains access for refilling water bottles only.

  • UBC Recreation is following the guidelines set out by regional health authorities in regarding the use of face masks.

    • At this time, the wearing of a face mask is not required to participate.
    • Participants may make their own decision on whether to provide a face mask for their child.

All participants will still need to register online regardless of card holding status. Drop-In at the Student Recreation Centre is free of charge for UBC Students, UBC Staff/Faculty, CSC or UNA Card members, or by paying the $6.00 drop-in fee.
