Beginning September 13, most UBC sport facilities and UBC Recreation programs will require proof of vaccination against COVID-19 for persons aged 12 and older.

UBC students, faculty, and staff – Please note that the proof of vaccination requirement to access fitness centres, team sports, and other recreational activities is by order of the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) and is distinct from UBC’s COVID-19 Rapid Testing Program and its declaration of vaccination status.

What’s Happening

To comply with the updated BC provincial health order UBC Recreation will require proof of vaccination to continue accessing some facilities or services.

Proof of vaccination will be required for:

  • Indoor adult sport, fitness programs, and bookings/rentals except at the UBC Aquatic Centre*
  • Access to Student Recreation Centre (SRC) & ARC
  • All Intramural leagues & events
  • All organized adult hockey programs (including drop-in stick & puck and drop-in hockey)
  • All rostered members of Thunderbirds Sport Clubs
  • All guests or spectators aged 12 and older

Proof of vaccination will NOT be required for:

  • Most programs and activities at the UBC Aquatic Centre.*
    • Please note that effective October 12, persons (including those 22 years and younger) participating in adult group sport activities or rentals at the UBC Aquatic Centre will be required to provide proof of vaccination (e.g. water polo, swim & triathlon clubs, scuba programs).
  • All indoor youth programs.
  • Public and figure skating drop-in sessions at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
  • Indoor gatherings with 50 people or less.

*Please note that swimming pools are specifically exempt from the proof of vaccination requirements under point L on page 3 of September 10’s revised Events & Gathering health order.

The proof of vaccination requirements will progress through several stages:

September 13 – September 26

Vaccination Requirement: Partially vaccinated (at least 1 dose)

Proof of Vaccination: During this initial period, various methods, including the BC Vaccine Card, can be used as proof of vaccination to verify against government photo ID. Some examples of other forms of proof of vaccination can be seen here (PDF).

Out-of-province students may use their provincial/territorial proof of vaccination and identification. International students can use the proof of vaccination used to enter Canada (like ArriveCAN) and their passport.

September 27 – October 23

Vaccination Requirement: Partially vaccinated (at least 1 dose)

Proof of Vaccination: Verification of your vaccination status will only be conducted using the BC Vaccine Card and government photo ID at the entrance of each facility or beginning of each activity.

October 24

Vaccination Requirement: Fully vaccinated (2 doses)

Proof of Vaccination: Verification of your vaccination status will only be conducted using the BC Vaccine Card and government photo ID at the entrance of each facility or beginning of each activity.

To continue using UBC’s sport facilities and to participate in recreation activities, you will need to provide proof of vaccination using the BC Vaccine Card. The BC Vaccine Card can either be a digital version on your phone or device, or a printed copy.

Once you have your BC Vaccine Card, you can show it along with your government ID (or UBC Student Card) to access UBC sport facilities & recreation activities.
