Fitness Centre Rules & Etiquette

For the enjoyment and safety of all patrons inside the BirdCoop and ARC Fitness Centres, please adhere to the following etiquette information:

COVID-19 Changes

  • Equipment Policies:
    • Every other piece of cardio equipment will be closed to allow for physical distancing.
    • Certain small equipment items will not be available due to the difficulty in cleaning and sanitizing.
      • These items include: dip belts, weight belts, ankle straps, and wrist straps. Should you require any of these items, please feel free to bring your own.
    • Other small equipment such as foam rollers, bands, skipping ropes, bar pads, etc. will be limited in number to ensure proper cleaning and sanitizing between workouts.
    • Chalk for use on the platforms and racks will not be provided. Members can bring their own supply of chalk to use.
    • Bar collars/clips will be removed from the floor but can be requested from the Floor Staff for use.
    • The scale will be removed from the fitness centre.
  • Cleaning Equipment Protocol
    • Upon entering the ARC and/or BirdCoop, members will receive a personal cleaning spray bottle for their workout.
    • Members are required to clean each piece of equipment before and after use.
    • There is paper towel throughout the fitness centre to use for cleaning.
    • When a member is finished their workout, they will return their cleaning spray bottle to the front desk to be sanitized for the next workout session.
  • Bag Policies:
    • Umbrellas, skateboards, bags, etc… will not be allowed to be stored behind the desks or by the Staff.
    • Small bags will be permitted in the BirdCoop. Please keep your belongings with you at all times.
  • Climbing Cave
    • The Climbing Cave will be closed until further notice.
  • Additional Information and Policies
    • Spotting, working out in partners/groups, or working in with other members are not allowed at this time. Please plan your workout accordingly.
    • Visiting and socializing of any kind will not be permitted during workout sessions.
    • For cancellations, please phone 604-822-6000, and speak with the SRC or ARC desk.  Cancellations will be accepted up to 1 hour before the registered session start time. 

Before Entering the Fitness Centres

  • No candy, food, gum or outside drinks allowed.
  • Plastic and personal water bottles are allowed.
  • Drink water. It is important to stay hydrated to avoid fatigue and dehydration.

Apparel Policies

  • Proper athletic shoes and workout clothes must be worn when in the fitness centre.
  • No jeans allowed.
  • Closed toe shoes must be worn at all times in the fitness centres.

Equipment Policies

  • Small equipment can be requested from the fitness centre desks by asking a Staff member.
  • Only use equipment on which you have been given proper instruction on.
  • Fitness Equipment cannot be removed from the fitness centres.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions to the staff immediately to ensure the safety of all patrons.

Proper Etiquette

  • Ask staff for assistance if you are unsure how to use a machine.
  • Use weight training belts when training with heavy weights.
  • Use collars on all bars at all times – please ask floor staff for them.
  • Use of personal chalk is allowed at the Olympic Platforms in the BirdCoop.
  • Do not drop weights except on the Olympic Platforms using bumper plates.
  • Put away all your weights and plates after use.
  • Wipe down all equipment and benches before and after use to be respectful of the next person to use that piece of equipment.
  • Keep workout area clear.
  • Please respect time limits listed for specific areas of the fitness centres such as the free weight, stretching, and squat racks and platform areas.
  • Do not work out between people using benches in dumbbell area.
  • Please limit your cardio use to 30 minutes (20 minutes at peak times).
  • If you feel faint or dizzy, stop, sit down and ask for assistance.

Failure to comply with these rules may result in loss of BirdCoop and ARC Fitness Centre privileges.

Fitness Classes Rules & Etiquette

For the enjoyment and safety of all patrons of Fitness & Classes programs, please adhere to the following information. Please note that:

  • Membership Based Programs include: Boot Camps & Spin Memberships, and Yoga & Pilates Memberships
  • Registration Based Programs include: Dance, Martial Arts, Cardio Conditioning & Strength classes.

Membership Based Programs Rules

  • Memberships can only be purchased at the SRC, ARC, and BirdCoop Front Desks.
  • All Boot Camps, Pilates, Spin, and Yoga classes operate on a term basis.
  • “Term” is a set of four months; either September – December, January – April, or May – August.
  • All Boot Camps, Pilates, Spin, and Yoga classes operate on a first come, first served basis until capacity of the class has been reached.
  • The purchase of a membership does not guarantee a spot in a membership based class.

Membership Based Programs Etiquette

  • Patrons must sign in at the respective buildings’ desk before a class begins.
  • After signing in, a patron will receive a token at the desk, which then gives them access to the class.
  • Tokens will be collected at the door of the class by a member of the Operations or Floor Staff.
