Adult – Clinics

Starting tennis? This course will introduce players to the rules, scoring and positioning in singles and doubles play. The most basic introduction of all tennis strokes (serve, volley, groundstrokes) will be taught, focusing on impact point and proper court positioning. By the conclusion of the course, participants will know how to start and play points using the serve and return.

Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring proper tennis attire and their own tennis racket. If you do not have a racket, you may borrow one from the UBC Coach for each 1.0 session.

This course is designed to help participants improve their consistency by focusing on the impact point and proper footwork. Participants will further develop the skills and ball control necessary to challenge opponents in common situations including groundstrokes, serves and returns, approach shots, and net play within a 3/4 court. Participants will be taught how to receive a variety of shots including deep, short and wide shots.

Prerequisites: This course is for players at the 2.0 level or who have been referred by a coach.

This program is for players between the 2.5 and 3.0 level or who have been referred by a coach.

Players will learn to apply spin and receive spin for groundstrokes, volleys and serves.

This program is a 4-week series of classes to introduce tennis to those who are new or have limited experience with the sport. The focus will include important tennis fundamentals such as proper grips, racket skills and preparation that will help players to build a consistent rally. The program will consist of workshop-style learning and high-energy team-oriented activities allowing players to improve their skills while fostering connections with fellow students. Participants should feel comfortable with rallying and playing points after completing this course.

Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring proper tennis attire and their own tennis racket. If you do not have a racket, you may borrow one from the UBC Coach!

Drills are a perfect way to take your game to the next level. Our drills sessions are all about repetition on each stroke and helping you build confidence. These sessions are designed to put players through physical workouts with an emphasis on technique. Each session will be broken down in to three phases of play and focus on serve and return, rallying from the baseline, and playing at the net. Drills are high-paced and physically challenging.

Prerequisites: This course is for players between the 2.5 and 3.0 level or who have been referred by a coach.

Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring proper tennis attire and their own tennis racket.

This is the ultimate program to raise your heart rate and work up a great sweat. Players in this program will be put through intensive tennis drills combined with a series of repetition and circuit training. This program will help improve your physical skills, movement, and endurance which are critical to improving your tennis development and performance in match-play. The UBC Singles League is a popular choice for intermediate to advanced players who wish to add regular competition to their tennis practice. This league runs in 3-week cycles and uses a competitive ladder format. Competitive play is often the key to making that jump to the next level and is a crucial part of any player's development. This league runs in 3-week cycles and uses a competitive ladder format. Players are moved within the ladder and after each cycle based on match outcomes. Matches are every Sunday and may be scheduled between 2:30 pm and 10:00 pm; each match is allotted 90 minutes to complete. Players may reschedule up to two matches per league season and court reservations for reschedules are the responsibility of the player requesting the change in date/time.
Prerequisites: This League is for players at the 3.0 level and above. Participants who do not meet the requirements for the minimum playing level may be asked to withdraw from the league and a full refund will be provided.

Think you and your friends have what it takes to beat the coach? In our 3.0 - 4.0 Pro-Am Doubles, players will compete with and against UBC Tennis coaches in doubles play. Participants will also have an opportunity to play supervised doubles matches while receiving valuable instruction on doubles strategy.

High Performance

This program is designed for high-level players who compete locally and/or provincially in both singles and doubles play. The technical, tactical, physical and mental aspects of the game are what players at this level need to explore and the drills in this program are designed to integrate these elements. Players will work to improve on the intense physical and technical aspects of the game.

Prerequisites: This program is for players at the 4.0 level and above. Participants must be approved for registration by a UBC High Performance Coach to confirm playing level. If you are unsure if you qualify, please email tennis.performance@ubc.ca. Players not at the appropriate level will be withdrawn from the program and will receive a full refund.

The Elite program is specifically designed for players competing in 3-star provincial tournaments and higher. Players will be practising in a highly competitive and engaging environment to further develop their passion for the sport. Training themes will include tactical and technical development, as well as a strong emphasis on physical and mental skills. Players are expected to compete in at least 8 Tennis BC or Tennis Canada sanctioned tournaments annually. It is strongly recommended that players arrange private lessons with your preferred High Performance Coach for an increased rate of development.

Required Equipment: Participants are required to bring proper tennis attire, their own tennis racket, tennis shoes and skipping rope.

Notes: Sign-in and sign-out for programming will be conducted at the entrance to the facility.

The Champs program is specifically designed for players wanting to compete in provincial tournaments and high school tennis. Players will continue to further develop fundamental tactical and technical competencies, as well as mental skills such as determination, focus and teamwork. It is strongly recommended that players in this program participate in at least 1 Tennis BC sanctioned tournament per term.

The Green Fundamentals program is for players who are looking to start their tennis journey or are continuing recreational players. Players will learn to serve, rally, play at the net, and keep score in singles and doubles play. Players will improve their tennis skills and learn the fundamentals of the sport through exciting practice and game-related activities. Upon completion of the program, players will have learned technical skills, have a better understanding of how to execute various tactics, and have a basic knowledge of the rules and scoring of the game. Green Fundamentals is played on a regulation-sized court with a low-compression green dot ball. Proper learning and sportsmanship behaviours are also reinforced. Players will be assessed on their skill level and attitude during the first week of the program and will then be placed into either Fundamentals 1 or 2 to provide optimal challenge for every player.

Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring proper tennis attire and their own tennis racket. Shared rackets are available upon request.

The Red Fundamentals program is for players who are looking to start their tennis journey or are recreational players. Players will learn basic rally, serve and net play skills through various progressions. Players will improve their tennis skills and learn the fundamentals of the sport through exciting practice and game-related activities. Players will also be introduced to the fundamental movement skills (agility, balance, coordination) that are important for athletic development. Red Fundamentals uses a scaled-down court and over-sized tennis balls that are 75% slower than the standard. Proper court etiquette and sport behaviour will also be emphasized. Players will be assessed on their ability, skill and willingness to learn during the first week of the program. Players will then be placed in to either Fundamentals 1 or 2 to provide the highest quality experience for every player.

The Tennis for Tots program introduces players to their first tennis experience in the most fun and innovative way. By using modified equipment and storytelling, our instructors turn skill-building activities in to an hour-long adventure each time. The aim is to capture each child's imagination while developing their basic coordination and tennis skills.

Prerequisites: Participants in this program must be between the ages of 4-5 years old as of December 31st.

Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring their own tennis racket. Shared rackets are available upon request.

Parental/Guardian Participation: A parent/guardian is required to attend the sessions and join in on the fun.
