Spring | Summer Tennis Programs

High Performance

The Champs program is specifically designed for players wanting to compete in 2-star provincial tournaments. Players will continue to further develop fundamental tactical and technical competencies, as well as mental skills such as determination, focus and teamwork. Players are expected to participate in at least 1 Tennis BC sanctioned tournament per term. It is strongly recommended that players also register for the optional Match Play sessions on Fridays.
 
Prerequisites: Participants must be approved for registration by a UBC High Performance Coach. If you are unsure about whether or not you qualify, please email tennis.performance@ubc.ca. Players interested in this program who are not currently registered in UBC Tennis programming can attend an Open Tryout or request an evaluation from one of our coaches. A registration link will be emailed on July 5 to those approved for the program.

Required Equipment: Participants are required to bring their own tennis racket, tennis shoes and skipping rope.

Notes: Parents/Guardians will be required to answer COVID-19 screening questions before the start of each session. Sign-in and sign-out for programming will be conducted at the entrance to the facility.

Players ages 10-14 who are interested in the U12/U14 Champs program can participate in this Open Tryout to be evaluated by our Coaches. The structure of the Open Tryout will be point play and matches. Parents will be contacted via email after the Tryout with recommended program and registration details. There will be no discussions in-person. There is no guarantee of getting in to the requested program, priority will be given to returning players. Registration is required as there are a limited amount of spots. Drop-ins will not be permitted. Players who are currently participating in UBC Tennis Centre programming can speak directly to their current coach if they are interested in the U12/U14 Champs program.

The Elite program is specifically designed for players competing in 3-star provincial tournaments and higher. Players will be practicing in a highly competitive and engaging environment to further develop their passion for the sport. Training themes will include tactical and technical development, as well as a strong emphasis on physical and mental skills. Players are expected to compete in at least 8 Tennis BC or Tennis Canada sanctioned tournaments annually. It is strongly recommended that players also register for the optional Match Play sessions on Saturdays and also arrange private lessons with your preferred High Performance Coach for an increased rate of development.

Prerequisites: Participants must be approved for registration by the UBC High Performance Director. If you are unsure about whether or not you qualify, please email tennis.performance@ubc.ca. Players interested in this program who are not currently registered in any UBC Tennis programming can attend an Open Tryout or request an evaluation from one of our coaches. The goal of this program is to inspire and nurture passion for the game, as well as help players perform in competition. Players will continue to refine and develop tactics, allowing them to successfully adapt to a range of situations on court. Players entering this program must have strong fundamentals in place, work ethic, and a desire to learn and improve. It is strongly recommended that players in this program participate in at least 1 Tennis BC sanctioned tournaments per term and also register for the optional Match Play sessions on Fridays to gain match play experience.

Prerequisites: Players must receive a recommendation from a UBC Tennis Coach in order to register. Please speak with your current coach to see if your child qualifies. Those interested in this program who are not currently participating in UBC Tennis programming can attend an Open Tryout or request an evaluation from one of our coaches. There will be a strong emphasis on athletic development and proper behaviour, sportsmanship, teamwork on court and having fun! It is strongly recommended that players in this program participate in at least 1 Tennis BC sanctioned tournament per term, and register for the optional Match Play sessions on Fridays to gain match play experience.

Prerequisites: Players must receive a recommendation from a UBC Tennis Coach in order to register. Please speak with your current coach to see if your child qualifies. Those interested in this program who are not currently participating in UBC Tennis programming can attend an Open Tryout or request an evaluation from one of our coaches. Students will also learn how to train physically and mentally, prepare for competition and perform at a higher level. It is strongly recommended that players in this program compete in high school tennis or at least 1 Tennis BC sanctioned tournament per term.

Prerequisites: Players must receive a recommendation from a UBC Tennis Coach in order to register. Please speak with your current UBC Coach to see if your child qualifies. The Red Fundamentals program is for players who are looking to start their tennis journey or are recreational players. Players will learn basic rally, serve and net play skills through various progressions. Players will improve their tennis skills and learn the fundamentals of the sport through exciting practice and game-related activities. Players will also be introduced to the fundamental movement skills (agility, balance, coordination) that are important for athletic development. Red Fundamentals uses a scaled-down court and over-sized tennis balls that are 75% slower than the standard. Proper court etiquette and sport behaviour will also be emphasized. Players will be assessed on their ability, skill and willingness to learn during the first week of the program. Players will then be placed in to either Fundamentals 1 or 2 to provide the highest quality experience for every player.
 
Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring their own tennis racket. Shared rackets are available upon request.

The Teen Fundamentals program is for players who are looking to start their tennis journey or are recreational players. Players will learn tactics and develop ball control skills to serve, rally and play at the net in singles and doubles play. Players will learn to improve their tennis skills and learn the fundamentals of the sport through exciting practice and game-related activities. Upon completion of the program, players will have a better understanding of the technique for all strokes, understand court positioning for singles and doubles, and have a basic knowledge of the rules and scoring. The goal is to provide players a fun and engaging environment to learn and play the sport of a lifetime.

Required Equipment:
Participants are asked to bring their own tennis racket. Shared rackets are available upon request.
