About the Team
The UBC Thunderbirds Curling Sport Club is a competitive curling team that competes provincially and nationally with tournaments under Canada West, U Sports, Curl BC and Curling Canada. The season consists of BC Curling Tour Events, local competitions and weekly practice, as well as off-season training and team activities. Our season culminates in the Canada West Curling Championships, where we hope to qualify for the U Sports national championship.
UBC’s Thunderbirds Curling SC is looking for passionate, determined and hard-working individuals interested in refining their technical curling skills and representing their university at a high level. Our roster consists of a Thunderbird and Gold Team, with 2 for male and female. The Thunderbird Team will be representing UBC at the Canada West Championship, while the Gold team will be more focused on skill development.

Team Structure
There will be two teams per gender (male and female) with four players on each and they will be designated as Thunderbird and Gold. The description of each team is as follows:
Thunderbird:
- These teams are designated to represent UBC at the Canada West Championship with the goal of reaching the U Sports National Championships. The Thunderbird Teams will be competing in the following tournaments: Vernon Prestige Classic, GEWC King Cash, Kamloops Crown of Curling, Abbotsford Curling Bonspiel, Women/Men Provincial Qualifier, Mens/Womens Provincials*, Canada West Curling Championships, U Sports National Championships* (*pending qualification)
Gold:
- These teams will be focused more on skills development during the year with an emphasis on bridging the gap between junior and men/women curling. The Gold teams will be competing in the following tournaments GEWC King Cash, GEWC Ladies/RCCC Dogwood, Abbotsford Curling Bonspiel, Women/Men Provincial Qualifier, Juniors U20 Qualifier, GEWC Open Spiel, Juniors U20 Provincials* (*pending qualification)
Men’s Team Schedule:
- Men’s League – Tues/Thurs @7pm-9pm
- Men’s Individual Team Practice – TBD
- Program Wide Practice – Sunday @10am-12pm
Women’s Team Schedule:
- Women’s League – Monday @7pm-9pm
- Women’s Individual Team Practice – Wednesday @9pm-11pm
- Program Wide Practice – Sunday @10am-12pm
UBC Curling will be holding tryouts for the Thunderbird and Gold teams in early September. In order to showcase interest please fill out our expression of interest form here. Selected players will have a mandatory training camp on September 21st and 22nd, 2024.
Additionally, team members are required to maintain good academic standing – minimum 60% average or passing standards as identified by their faculty – and must not be on academic probation.
Team members must be students at the University of British Columbia who are registered in an undergraduate or graduate 9-credit course load per term in the current session, or fulfilling the requirements for a PhD/Masters, or Co-op Program.
Students registered in diploma programs, certificate programs, or affiliated colleges/ programs with the University of British Columbia including: Carey Theological College, Regent College, St. Mark’s College, and the Vancouver School of Theology, are not eligible for active membership in a UBC Thunderbirds Sport Club.

- First year of the AMS Curling Club
- First UBC competitive curling program in over 20 years
2022-23
- Second year of the AMS Curling Club
- UBC competitive curling teams compete informally in local tournaments
2023-24
- Third year of the AMS Curling Club
- Curling is announced as a new competitive sport club to begin competition in 2024-25
In addition to its competitive interests, the UBC Thunderbirds Curling Sport Club believes in fostering interest and passion for curling in the UBC community. Many of our players assist with the Alma Mater Society’s Curling Club events, such as its Learn to Curl Clinics, as a way to give back to the community. Curling is a pivotal sport in Canada’s history, as our country has consistently performed well on the world stage and we are looking to continue that legacy with our club and competitive program at UBC.
