Tryouts are held annually in September.

Eligibility Requirements:

Prospective athletes of all backgrounds are encouraged to tryout, however, curling experience and understanding of the sport is recommended.

• Attendance at Program and Team Practices: 2x per week
• Commitment to playing in scheduled competitions: 2-4x per term
• Commitment to playing in the Canada West Curling Championships hosted by UofA from January 28 to 31, 2027. (Thunderbird athletes only)
• Helping with program fundraisers

Team Fees:

Team fees for Thunderbird athletes will total an estimated $1200 and for Gold athletes an estimated $800. This covers individual team and program expenses such as event registration, practice ice time, travel, equipment, apparel and more. Fees are to be paid at the start of each term with delayed payment plans available. Team fees are subject to change.
Additionally, team members will contribute to fundraising efforts throughout the season with surpluses reallocated to the specific athletes.

Academic Requirements:

Team members are required to maintain good academic standing – minimum 60% average or passing standards as identified by their faculty – and must not be on academic probation.

Team members must be students at the University of British Columbia who are registered in an undergraduate or graduate 9-credit course load per term in the current session, or fulfilling the requirements for a PhD/Masters, or Co-op Program.

Students registered in diploma programs, certificate programs, or affiliated colleges/ programs with the University of British Columbia including: Carey Theological College, Regent College, St. Mark’s College, and the Vancouver School of Theology, are not eligible for active membership in a UBC Thunderbirds Sport Club.

2021-22

• First year of the AMS Curling Club
• First UBC competitive curling program in over 20 years

 2022-23

• Second year of the AMS Curling Club
• UBC competitive curling teams compete informally in local tournaments

2023-24

• Third year of the AMS Curling Club
• Curling is announced as a new competitive sport club to begin competition in 2024-25

2024-25

• Inaugural year as part of the Thunderbird Sports Club Fourth year of the AMS Curling Club
• Created 2 Curling Teams for both male and female players (Thunderbird and Gold)
• Competed in an assortment of bonspiels and provincial tour competitions
• Both Thunderbird Teams attended Canada West

The UBC Thunderbirds Curling Sport Club believes in fostering interest and passion for curling in the UBC community. We plan to execute “Learn to Curl” clinics every winter term, to teach people about the beauty of the wonderful winter sport. Curling is a pivotal sport in Canada’s history, as our country has consistently performed well on the world stage and we are looking to continue that legacy with our club and competitive program at UBC.
