Thank you for your interest in becoming an official UBC Thunderbirds Sport Club (TSC)!

We will be accepting sport club applications in the Fall of 2023 for a 2024/2025 season intake.

Please read our Information Package for more details on the program and the application process.


Sport Club Eligibility Requirements

If your club or program meets the below requirements, then you should consider applying.

  • The purpose of your sport club is competitive and athletic in nature,
  • Does not compete in a sport already currently offered within the TSC or Varsity program,
  • Competes in a recognized inter-collegiate or club league affiliated with a provincial, national or inter-collegiate sport governing body,
  • Club must be comprised of full-time UBC students only,
  • Club must be fully led and operated by student-athletes.

Here is the timeline for this round of applications.

 October 1st – 29th TSC Application Period  The TSC Office will be accepting applications at this time. Instructions to apply can be found below. Applications will be due on October 29th at 11:59 p.m.
October 12th TSC Info Session

Meet with the TSC administration team to ask any questions you have about the application.

 November 2023  Interviews – 1st Round First round of interviews of potential sport clubs. Only those selected based on their application package will move on to the interview stage.
January 2024 Interviews – 2nd Round Conditional second round of interviews for short-listed applicants, if necessary.
February 2024  TSC Offer(s) Sent Out Conditional offer(s) sent to successful sport club applicant.
 March 2024  Executive Elections Successful sport club(s) will undergo electing competitive sport club members as executives for the upcoming season.
 May 2024  New Executive Onboarding and Training Training new executives in their roles for the 2024-2025 season.
Fall 2024/2025 Inaugural Season as a Sport Club New sport club(s) begin full operations in the Thunderbirds Sport Clubs program in Term 1.

Why be a Thunderbird Sport Club?

Being a Thunderbirds Sport Club allows you to represent UBC as a Thunderbird at your competition. Along with the representation of the Thunderbird, you receive administrative support from the TSC Office and the department of Athletics & Recreation.

Clubs within the TSC program can receive help from the TSC Office in the following:

  • Official status as a UBC Thunderbirds team
  • Comprehensive executive and student leadership training
  • Dedicated support from an administration team within the Department of Athletics & Recreation
  • Financial support through 3 grants:
    • Coach Grant
    • National Championship Travel Grant
    • Fundraising matching program
  • Access to UBC online fundraising platforms and support through the Development and Alumni Engagement team
  • Communications and Marketing support including access to an official UBC email, a Club webpage hosted by UBC Recreation, and story amplification via UBC Recreation channels
  • Access to letters requesting Academic Concession for travel & injury

Application Process

This year's application consists of the completion of the following documents:

Send the completed application package to sport.clubs@ubc.ca by October 29th, 2023 at 11:59pm.

A complete application package MUST include:

  • TSC Application Questionnaire (Word)
  • Financial Overview (Excel)
  • Season Overview (Excel)
  • Club Constitution (or similar document)
  • Club’s Financial Statements (if available); or a note indicating why the statements have not been included

with the subject line "SportClubApplication_SportName" (example: SportClubApplication_VoyageurCanoeing).

Prospective sport clubs will be evaluated using this matrix, with the following categories being measured:

  • Club Presence at UBC
  • Membership
  • Student Leadership
  • Financial
  • Coaching
  • Competition Structure,
  • Facilities, Equipment & Training
  • Risk Management
  • Alignment with UBC Athletics & Recreation
