About the Team

UBC Thunderbirds Lacrosse Sport Club is a student-run club program that is competing against both collegiate and club teams across western Canada and northwestern USA. This past season the Thunderbirds finished with a 6-4-4 record in the Canada West Field Lacrosse League, and a record of 5-2 in intercollegiate play. Further, since 2013 the UBC Lacrosse team has successfully competed against 5 Canadian university teams in BC and Alberta, defeating 4 of them, and for the 2017-2018, our club travelled to Oregon and Washington to compete against American university club teams. This year our goal is to have a successful season in the Canada West Field Lacrosse League and further grow our intercollegiate competition north of the border.

Anyone interested can also  the club via social media or email, and more information and arrangements can also be made then.

*The UBC Lacrosse Sport Club’s season runs from September to April. This year the team will continue to compete in the Canada West Field Lacrosse League (www.cwfll.ca) throughout the year. As well, our team is hoping to play in a few select exhibition games against American opponents in the fall, and Canadian opponents in spring. Joining the team allows you to compete on a weekly basis throughout the academic year and help shape the intercollegiate field lacrosse landscape in western Canada.

Eligibility Requirements:

The team is looking to recruit players who will be dedicated and give their best effort when on the field.

UBC requires each player to be registered in 9 credits per term or registered in a UBC affiliated co-op term. A player can be registered in fewer than 9 credits if they have fulfilled all their academic requirements and are expecting to graduate in that term.

Each player must maintain a minimum academic average of 60%.

Try Outs:

Try-outs will take place in early September.

Contact us on our Facebook, Twitter page, or email us at lacrosse.sc@ubc.ca to inquire about joining the team.

Team Fees:

The team offers varying payment options to accommodate different player’s current financial situation. Email lacrosse.sc@ubc.ca for the total breakdown of team fees.

Team fees will cover team expenses including travel cost, league fees, birdcoop membership, competition and practice apparel, team insurance and field time. Additionally, team members will be expected to contribute to meet fundraising goals throughout the season. For the past 2018-2019 season, team fees were $500 CDN. This fee covered TSC fees, practice uniforms, travel, league fees for games, practice times and practice equipment. As a club, we do not want money to be a barrier, with proper arrangements, finance plans can be made.

Practice Schedule:

The 2019-2020 practice schedule can now be found on our homepage under “Schedule.”

Competition Schedule:

Games typically occur on a weekly basis throughout the academic year. The 2019-2020 practice and game schedule is still TBD and will be confirmed by September. (See schedule for details)

The UBC Thunderbirds Lacrosse Sport Club was established in 2011 by Club founder Dan Millar. In the clubs early years of existence, the focus was on playing and teaching lacrosse for the love of the game. Since the fall of 2013, as the club became more established, it sought competition from surrounding Universities in BC and Alberta. The UBC Thunderbirds Lacrosse Sport Club finished second in their inaugural intercollegiate tournament, setting the tone for things to come. As well, last year our club travelled to the USA to compete for the first time. After having played exhibition games against Men’s club teams in the lower mainland the following spring, the Club joined the Canada West Field Lacrosse League (CWFLL) in the fall of 2014. Their inaugural season in the competitive league saw them achieve a record of 6-10, a 4th place finish in the league standings, and secure a berth in the Provincial Championships. Here, they finished as the runner-up in the Tier II championship. From beginning as a group of friends who agreed to pass around a ball in first year residence, UBC TSC Lacrosse has gone on to go undefeated in the 2016 season, win the 2015-16 BC Provincial Championship, win the 2016 University of Alberta Invitational tournament, and be honored as Team of the Year in the UBC Thunderbirds Sport Clubs Department in 2015-2016.
