About the Team
The UBC Thunderbirds Table Tennis Sport Club is a highly competitive team competing under the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA), as well as other major tournaments locally and nationally. Our sport club includes a co-ed team and a women’s team. Each competing team features 8-10 student-athletes.
The club’s goal is to represent UBC locally, at the NCTTA level, and even internationally and to succeed at every level. The season runs from September to April and we hold multiple practices each week. In addition, we encourage participation in tournaments throughout the season to build up experience leading up to NCTTA tournaments or simply to continue growing as an athlete.

Eligibility Requirements
We are looking for passionate and skilled table tennis players who are excited to join a great competitive team to make a positive difference with the club!
Expectations for team members include:
- Attendance at mandatory practice sessions
- Attendance at local and national tournaments
- Be active in team events and fundraising efforts
Many of the tournaments take place in the United States so team members will have to have a valid passport and/or a US Visa or other documents that confirm your eligibility to cross the border.
Tryouts
More information will be posted on our Instagram account, @ubctabletennis, and the Facebook page, UBC Table Tennis at the beginning of September every year.
Team Fees
Team fees may vary between $400-700 and are currently under review. This will cover some team expenses such as travel costs, gym rental, jerseys and more. Additionally, team members are expected to contribute to and take part in fundraising efforts throughout the season. An annual surplus of funds will be reimbursed to members on a regular basis. Team fees are subject to change.
Practice Schedule
Weekly practice typically occurs on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in the first semester. Schedules may change as we change semesters. Specific times and locations for practices are to be determined. Team members are expected to attend all practices unless there are unexpected emergencies or other valid reasons that are communicated appropriately.
Practice schedule is subject to change.
Competitions
There are four NCTTA tournaments throughout the Winter Session and all team members are expected to attend all tournaments. The club also participates in locally-held tournaments or other tournaments outside of the NCTTA throughout the year depending on the competition level and the schedule.
Academic Requirements
Team members are required to maintain good academic standing – minimum 60% average or passing standards as identified by their faculty – and must not be on academic probation.
Team members must be students at the University of British Columbia who are registered in an Undergraduate or Graduate 9-credit course load per term in the current winter session, or fulfilling the requirements for a PhD/Masters, or Co-op Program. (Students registered in diploma programs, certificate programs, or affiliated colleges/ programs with the University of British Columbia including: Carey Theological College, Regent College, St. Mark’s College, and the Vancouver School of Theology, are not eligible for active membership in a UBC Thunderbirds Sport Club.)

The UBC Table Tennis Club was founded in 2002 as an AMS club. The club provided an opportunity for table tennis athletes to get together to practice, compete, and share their love for the sport. All the while, the club continuously pushed for more recognition for the sport within the local community, the University of British Columbia, and other BC universities. In 2006, the club developed a competitive team, providing a platform for experienced table tennis athletes to travel and compete in national and international events across Canada and the United States.
Since then, the competitive team has actively competed in the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association. The team achieved multiple Northwest divisional and West Regional titles, and has also consistently placed in the top 16 at the National Collegiate Table Tennis Championships.
In 2020, the competitive team parted ways with the AMS UBC Table Tennis Club to join the UBC Thunderbirds Sport Clubs. Today, the UBC Table Tennis Thunderbirds Sport Club attracts experienced table tennis student-athletes by providing one of the few opportunities in Canada to develop advanced athletic and student leadership skills.
