About the Team
UBC Wrestling is a co-ed competitive Thunderbirds Sport Club representing UBC in provincial, national, and U.S. collegiate competition.
After the UBC varsity wrestling program was discontinued in 1987, student-athletes continued the sport through the club system. In 2021, the competitive program was formally rebuilt with a clear focus on high-performance training and national-level competition. Since then, the team has grown into a stable, nationally active program competing across BC, Canada, and the United States.
This team is for athletes who want to compete seriously. We train with intent, we travel regularly, and we hold ourselves to high standards in the room and academically. Our goal is to continue rebuilding UBC Wrestling as a respected competitive program while developing disciplined, accountable athletes who represent the university well.
Academic Requirements:
Team members are required to maintain good academic standing – minimum 60% average or passing standards as identified by their faculty – and must not be on academic probation.
Team members must be students at the University of British Columbia who are registered in an Undergraduate or Graduate 9-credit course load per term in the current session, or fulfilling the requirements for a PhD/Masters, or Co-op Program. (Students registered in diploma programs, certificate programs, or affiliated colleges/ programs with the University of British Columbia including: Carey Theological College, Regent College, St. Mark’s College, and the Vancouver School of Theology, are not eligible for active membership in a UBC Thunderbirds Sport Club.)
The TSC Wrestling team is a competitive roster. Athletes are selected based on:
- Prior wrestling experience and competition history
- Technical readiness and physical preparedness
- Consistency in training
- Academic eligibility
- Alignment with team culture and expectations
Interested athletes should contact the team early in Term 1. Attendance at early-season practices is required for evaluation. Final roster decisions are made in consultation with our head coach and executive team.
The AMS UBC Wrestling Club continues to operate separately for recreational participation. Athletes seeking introductory or recreational training are encouraged to join through that pathway.

Wrestling has deep roots at UBC. Before the varsity program was discontinued in 1987, UBC produced national and Olympic-level athletes and built a reputation as one of the stronger university wrestling programs in Canada. That legacy did not disappear when varsity funding was cut, but it did shift.
Through the 1990s and early 2000s, students kept wrestling alive through club efforts. The program experienced periods of growth and decline, but there was always a core group committed to making sure the sport did not vanish from campus.
In 2021, the competitive program was formally rebuilt with certified coaching and a renewed focus on serious competition. Since then, the team has steadily expanded its roster, returned to consistent provincial and national competition, and re-established UBC Wrestling within BC, Canada, and the U.S.
