Dylan's Story | UBC Tennis Centre

Dylan’s Story: Finding a Better Work-Life Balance

Dylan works at the UBC School of Kinesiology and had not swung a racket in 14 years before coming to the UBC Tennis Centre. Now he’s progressed through Clinics and Drills and is playing at a competitive level during his lunch hours.

“Having a reason to get away from work and exercise during the day has been great for my work-life balance. It’s a really low-pressure environment and it’s convenient that it’s right on campus for me.” – Dylan

How does playing tennis here enhance your workday at UBC?

Dylan: Having a reason and the motivation to get up and be active and get away from work for that 60 minutes every day has been great for me. I really enjoy getting away for my lunch hour and there’s all the ameneties so I can shower after and head right back to my desk.

Had you played Tennis before trying out our programs?

Dylan: I had played the odd time as a child at a summer camp or with friends, but I had not swung a racket in 14 years realistically before I started at the UBC Tennis Centre. The first time I came I wasn’t sure of what level I was at and where I’d fit in, but the coaches were really good at accommodating a range of skills and I’ve progressed from a 2.0 level to now a 4.0 level over the past 12 months!

Do you have any advice for other UBC Staff & Faculty looking to get involved in Tennis?

Dylan: Find an excuse to get exerecise during the day! The UBC Tennis Centre is a great option – the coaches are great, it’s a comfortable place, they can accomodate a wide range of levels and abilities. You can participate in programs that are low-pressure with limited competition, but if you want to play at a competitive level, you can also get that.

Adult 1.0 Clinics

What is it? Starting Tennis? This course will introduce players to the rules, scoring and positioning in singles and doubles play. The most basic introduction of all strokes (serve, volley, and groundstrokes) will be taught, focusing on impact point and proper court positioning. By the conclusion of the session, participants will know how to start and play points using the serve and return.
Format: Each session has 1 coach and a maximum of 8 participants.

We do not run Adult 1.0 Clinics in the summer. Check out our Adult 1.0-2.0 Summer Camps or stay tuned for September Clinics which you can register for as of July 2.

1.5-2.5 Intro to Doubles Play

This is a brand new adult introduction to doubles play. This program is for people who have been introduced to the game of tennis, but don't necessarily have consistency or control in their game or their strokes. It is a great way to meet new people and to learn new techniques and tactics for doubles play. Coaches will rotate games and play with clients to help with positioning and strategies to ensure players advance to the next level. This program is for players level 1.5 to 2.5. Come out and join in on the fun!

We do not run Intro to Doubles Play programs in the summer. Check out our Adult 1.0-2.0 Summer Camps or stay tuned for September Clinics which you can register for as of July 2.

Adult 1.0/2.0 Camps

Our Adult Camps are designed to compact our regular Adult 1.0 clinics into one week either over spring break, or over the summer! The most basic introduction of all strokes (serve, volley, and groundstrokes) will be taught, focusing on impact point and proper court positioning. By the conclusion of the camp, participants will know how to begin a match and play points using serve and return. Players will further develop the skills and ball control necessary to be consistent in common situations including baseline rallying, serve and return approach, and net play. This program is for players new to tennis or players who have not taken lessons previously.
