Jackie's Story | UBC Tennis Centre

Jackie’s Story: A Beginner’s Take on Tennis at UBC

Jackie was looking for a place to learn how to play tennis and came across our Adult 1.0 programs. A few years later and she’s progressed through the different levels of clinics and is now here up to three times each week!

“It’s casual enough to not be intimidating, the coaches are encouraging and positive, and the community in the lessons has been great in my experience.” – Jackie

Can you tell us about your first few lessons at the UBC Tennis Centre?

Jackie:I came in having watched a lot of tennis and thinking I was going to be really good, and that was not the case! But Jason (the coach) was super great, he kept it light and positive. We had a lot of fun and learned lots.

What helped you get where you are today with your tennis game?

Jackie: Really, it’s the people and how fun it is to play that keeps me coming back to play more. With more practice you slowly get better, but the reason I keep coming back is the community here.

What advice would you have for someone who is looking to get started with tennis?

Jackie: Take lessons (I definitely needed them!) and just play as much as possible. Find a place that you feel comfortable playing in. I like the UBC Tennis Centre because it’s casual enough to not be intimidating, the coaches are encouraging and positive, and the community in the lessons has been great in my experience.

Adult Spring Break Camps

Our Adult Spring Break Camps are designed to compact our regular Adult 1.0 clinics into one week! The most basic introduction of all strokes (serve, volley, and groundstrokes) will be taught, focusing on impact point and proper court positioning. By the conclusion of the camp, participants will know how to begin a match and play points using serve and return. Players will further develop the skills and ball control necessary to be consistent in common situations including baseline rallying, serve and return approach, and net play. This program is for players new to tennis or players who have not taken lessons previously.
