Beginning July 13, the UBC Aquatic Centre will re-open with limited hours to UBC students and current members for length swims and aqua fitness classes. Reservations required.

Things to Know

  1. COVID-19 Safety
    • The UBC Aquatic Centre will be operating with reduced capacities and limited hours to allow for distancing measures & cleaning.
      • Access is limited to registered guests only – no spectators will be permitted.
    • All sessions/programs at the UBC Aquatic Centre require advanced registration.
    • All participants will be assigned a designated pool space or lane for the duration of their visit.
      • Length swims – One swimmer per lane (2.5m lane width)
    • Swimmers are to arrive swim ready. Please bring your own:
      • Towel
      • Goggles
      • Swim cap
      • Filled water bottle
    • No other personal equipment is allowed; merchandise, food, and beverages will not be available for purchase at the front desk.
    • Swimmers are strongly encouraged to wear a face mask at all times during their visit other than when in the water. 
    • The UBC Aquatic Centre Return to Activity Plan is based on the Lifesaving Society BC/Yukon: Guidelines for Reopening BC’s Pools and Waterfronts.

  1. Amenities
    • Change rooms, lockers, water fountains, hot tub, steam/sauna, merchandise sales, facility equipment/toys will not be available.
    • Swimmers should be prepared to remove shoes on arrival and change on the pool deck (please arrive swim ready). Follow the marked path to take a cleansing shower before entering the water.
  2. Entering/Exiting the Facility
    • Please arrive no earlier than 15 minutes and no less than 5 minutes prior to the start of a scheduled session or program.
    • Swimmers will enter through the main entrance (southwest doors) of the UBC Aquatic Centre following a brief check in with a member of our team.
    • All guests will exit through the northwest doors via the Universal change room. 
      • The northwest door from the pool deck will be available as an accessible exit as required.

  • Length swim – Beginning July 13
  • Aqua fitness classes – Beginning July 14
  • Performance private coaching – Beginning July 14
  • Public swim – Beginning July 20

Registration

  • All programs, including lane swims, require advanced online registration. On-site registration is not available.
  • Registration for each session/program is available 48 hours prior the start of a session/program.
  • Registration is limited to one session/program per day. 
  • Registration is currently only available to UBC students and existing members.

Session Structure

  • Length swim sessions are 45 minutes in duration, with a 15 minute break in between sessions to allow for distancing.
  • During family swim sessions, only members of the same household may swim together.

Registration

UBC Recreation is using a new registration system beginning May 2020; an online login will be required for all activities. If you have not recently set up a new login, please follow the link below to set up a new online login.

Length Swim – Beginning July 13

  • Advanced registration is required. No on-site registration is permitted.
  • Open to swimmers ages 16 years and older and who are comfortable in deep water.
  • Length swim is for lap swimming only.

Aqua Fitness – Beginning July 20

  • Advanced registration is required. No on-site registration is permitted.
  • Maximum of six participants per class.
  • Open to individuals ages 12 years and older.
  • All aqua fitness classes will be taught without equipment; participants are to maintain 2m distance from others.

Performance Private Coaching – Beginning July 14

  • Guests interested in Performance Private Coaching should contact: greszata@ubc.ca.
  • Coaching sessions are limited to 1 individual unless they are part of the same household.

Public Swim – Beginning July 25

  • Advanced registration is required. No on-site registration is permitted.
  • Open to swimmers of all levels and abilities.
    • Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a participating adult or youth (16 years and older) responsible for the direct supervision of the child. 
    • Children under the age of 8 must have the participating adult or youth (16 years or older) within arm’s reach at all times.   
  • Members of the same household are asked to swim together and ensure appropriate distancing from other groups.

Additional Information and Policies

  • Registration for each session/program is available 48 hours prior the start of a session/program.
  • Only register for sessions/programs you are able to attend; repeated no-shows are subject to a 1-month membership suspension.
  • Registration is limited to one session/program per day.

Cover your cough or sneeze with your elbow

Avoid touching your face

Wash hands thoroughly & frequently

Use hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands

What to Expect

Arrival & Entry

  • Please arrive no earlier than 15 minutes and no less than 5 minutes prior to the start of a scheduled session or program.
  • Following check-in with staff outside of the (southwest) entrance, visitors will enter the building and proceed to their assigned space/lane
    • Please follow directional arrows and signs; respect distancing measures.
  •  Summer Camps – Each camp group will have a designated sign-in/sign-out location outside the south side of the UBC Aquatic Centre.
    • Please check pre-camp email for specific directions on the location of sign-in/sign-out for each camp.

On Deck Requirements 

  • Upon arrival, all participants will be assigned a designated pool space or lane for the duration of their visit.
  • Swimmers should be prepared to remove shoes on arrival and change on the pool deck (please arrive swim ready as change rooms are not available).
    • After removing shoes, proceed to your assigned lane before changing.
    • Each assigned lane/space will have a chair to leave belongings.
  • After changing, follow the marked path to take a cleansing shower before entering the pool.
  • Swimmers are strongly encouraged to wear a face mask at all times during their visit other than when in the water. 

Available Amenities & Equipment 

  • Change rooms, lockers, water fountains, hot tub, steam/sauna, merchandise sales, facility equipment/toys will not be available.
    • Visitors will not be able to access any pool area they have not registered for.
  • Washrooms are available.
  • Goggles and swim caps are permitted. No other personal swimming equipment (i.e. fins, pull-buoy, kickboard, etc.). (*exceptions being made for high performance athletes with UBC Varsity Swimming Programs and Swimming Canada’s High Performance Vancouver)
  • Merchandise (including swim caps & goggles), food, and beverages will not be available for purchase at the front desk.

Departure & Exit:

  • Please continue to distance when exiting the pool, gather belongings, and moving towards the exit.
  • Swimmers are strongly encouraged to wear a face mask at all times during their visit other than when in the pool. 
  • All guess will exit through the northwest doors via the universal change room. 
    • The northwest door from the pool deck will be available as an accessible exit as required.

Daily Health Screening

All persons visiting UBC facilities or taking part in a program must be able to answer “no” to all of the following questions:

Have you, or members of your household, experienced any flu-like or cold symptoms within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or is awaiting COVID-19 test results within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, travelled internationally within the last 14 days, including to the USA?

  • If the answer is “yes” to any question on arrival, they will not be allowed to attend any programs for health and safety reasons. A supervisor will follow-up with them through phone or email to issue a credit for programs that are missed.
  • Translated written copies of pre-screening questions will be available to ensure language is not a barrier to understanding and adherence to health and safety measures.

Frequently Asked Questions

The facility will operate with reduced hours; however, as opportunities to increase access and programming becomes feasible the hours of operation may change.

Change rooms, lockers, water fountains, hot tub, steam/sauna, merchandise sales, facility equipment/toys will not be available.

UBC Recreation is following the guidelines set out by regional health authorities in regarding the use of face masks. At this time, the wearing of a face mask is not required to participate. Participants may make their own decision on wearing a mask.
