Fall lessons are available for online registration. The UBC Aquatic Centre is open with limited hours and reduced activities. Length swim, recreation swim, swimming lessons, private lessons, performance private coaching, certifications and aqua fitness classes are available at this time. The UBC Aquatic Centre is open only for registered programs or by appointment. Face coverings are required when indoor at all UBC sport facilities except when exercising or performing physical activity.

Things to Know

  1. COVID-19 Safety
    • The UBC Aquatic Centre will be operating with reduced capacities and limited hours to allow for distancing measures & cleaning.
      • Access is limited to registered guests only – no spectators will be permitted.
    • All sessions/programs at the UBC Aquatic Centre require advanced registration.
    • UBC Athletics & Recreation requires all individuals (including staff) to wear non-medical face masks while indoor at UBC Sport Facilities. Individuals can remove non-medical face masks prior to entering the water. For additional information on this policy please view our announcement.
    • All individuals will be assigned a designated pool space or lane(s) for the duration of their visit.
      • Length swim – swimmers per lane:
        • Maximum of three (3) swimmers per double-wide lane for 25m short-course
        • Maximum of five (5) swimmers per double-wide lane for 50m long-course
  1. Entering/Exiting the Facility
    • Please arrive no earlier than 15 minutes and no less than 5 minutes prior to the start of a scheduled session or program.
    • Swimmers will enter through the main entrance (southwest doors) of the UBC Aquatic Centre following a brief check-in with a member of our team.
    • Swimmers will be assigned a path of travel to the pool deck via one of two universal change room spaces.
    • All guests will exit through the northwest doors via one of two universal change rooms. 
      • The northwest door from the pool deck will be available as an accessible exit as required.

  1. Amenities
    • Washrooms and post swim change rooms are available, but lockers, private showers, water fountains, hot tub, steam/sauna, hair dryers and facility equipment/toys will not be available.
    • Guests are allowed to utilize the change rooms following their swim for a quick change (no more than 8-10 minutes).
      • All swimmers are asked to arrive swim ready as change rooms are not available prior to a swim.
      • All change rooms will be considered universal and are inclusive of all genders.
      • Swim Lesson participants (SK 5-10) will not have access to change spaces.
    • Merchandise sales (including swim caps & goggles), food, and beverages will not be available for purchase at the front desk.
    • Guests are asked to ensure that all open changes rooms (on deck changes) remain family friendly.
    • A small bin is provided on-deck to store personal items.
  2. Equipment 
    • Swimmers are to arrive swim ready. Please bring your own:
      • Towel, goggles, swim cap, and filled water bottle, deck shoes/sandals, and small bag for personal items.
    • Facility equipment is available to guests on a first-come, first-served basis (limited availability).
    • No other personal swimming equipment is permitted in the facility (i.e. fins, pull-buoy, snorkel, etc.). (*exceptions being made for high performance athletes with UBC Varsity Swimming Programs and Swimming Canada’s High Performance Vancouver).

Registration

  • All programs, including lane swims, require advanced online registration. On-site registration is not available.
  • Registration for drop-in activities is available 50 hours prior the start of a session/program.
  • On-site support with account set-up or debit payments can be facilitated through Customer Service Appointments
  • Registration is limited to one session/program per day. 
  • Registration is currently only available to UBC students and existing members.

Cancellation Policy

  • If you are unable to attend your registered session, please phone the UBC Aquatic Centre to cancel at 604-822-4501.
  • UBC Recreation has a three-strike policy for no shows and double bookings within a 24 hour period for the UBC Aquatic Centre. After three strikes the registered account will be frozen, and unable to book a time slot for a one-week period.

Session Structure

  • Length swim sessions are 45 minutes in duration, with a 15-minute break in between sessions to allow for distancing. All swimmers are asked to exit the water and make their way out of the facility at the end of their registered session.
  • Community swim sessions are 45 or 60 minutes in duration, only members of the same household may swim together.

Registration

UBC Recreation is using a new registration system beginning May 2020; an online login will be required for all activities. If you have not recently set up a new login, please follow the link below to set up a new online login.

UBC Students – please ensure that you have activated your login using your CWL in order to qualify for student rates and free access to the UBC Aquatic Centre and SRC drop-in activities.

Memberships

Purchase a membership and save! UBC Aquatic Centre Memberships are now available online.

All UBC Aquatic Centre memberships include access to reserved drop-in Aqua Fitness classes, drop-in length swims and drop-in community swims. At this time, all activities other than swim lessons and performance private coaching require a membership to participate. Drop-In Activities 

Length Swim 
  • Advanced registration is required. No on-site registration is permitted.
  • Open to swimmers ages 13 years and older and who are comfortable in deep water.
  • Length swim is for lap swimming only.

Recreation Swim 
  • Advanced registration is required. No on-site registration is permitted.
  • Open swimming or play time for swimmers of all levels and abilities.
  • Recreation or Leisure pool access available during these times for open swims; no lanes available. Please see the UBC Aquatic Centre Schedule to view swims taking place in only Leisure or Recreation tanks to ensure you are reserving your activity in the the correct space.
  • Reminder that children under 8 must be within arm’s reach of a parent or guardian, and children 12 and under must be attending with a participating adult. 

Aqua Fitness 
  • Advanced registration is required. No on-site registration is permitted.
  • Maximum of eight participants per class.
  • Open to individuals ages 12 years and older.
  • All aqua fitness classes will be taught with the use of facility equipment (upon availability); participants are to maintain 2m distance from others.

Registration Based Programs 

Private Lessons 
  • Advanced registration is required. No on-site registration is permitted.
  • Prerequisites: None. Ages 3 – 14.
  • All Preschool levels, and Swim Kids 1, 2, 3, 4 will require the active participation of a parent/guardian in the water with their child for the lesson (1 parent per child), as the instructor will teach from the edge of the pool or at a distance. (Note: parents/guardians of multiple children are reminded that no spectating is permitted and children are not to be left unattended).

Swimming Lessons
  • Advanced registration is required. No on-site registration is permitted.
  • Prerequisites: None. Ages 3 – 14.
  • All Preschool levels, and Swim Kids 1, 2, 3, 4 will require the active participation of a parent/guarding in the water with their child for the lesson (1 parent per child), as the instructor will teach from the edge of the pool or at a distance. (Note: parents/guardians of multiple children are reminded that no spectating is permitted and children are not to be left unattended).

Performance Private Coaching
  • Guests interested in Performance Private Coaching should contact: aquatic.centre@ubc.ca.
  • Coaching sessions are limited to 1 individual unless they are part of the same household.

What to Expect

Arrival & Entry

  • Following check-in with staff outside of the (southwest) entrance, visitors will enter the building and proceed to their assigned space/lane.
    • Please follow directional arrows and signs; respect distancing measures.
  • Swimming Lessons – Group swimming lesson participants will have a designated sign-in/sign-out location outside the south side of the UBC Aquatic Centre. Please check pre-lesson email for specific directions on the location of sign-in/sign-out for each lesson.

Departure & Exit:

  • Please continue to maintain physical distancing when exiting the pool, gather belongings, and moving towards the exit.
  • All guests will exit through the northwest doors via one of two universal change rooms. 
    • The northwest door from the pool deck will be available as an accessible exit as required.

 

On Deck Requirements 

  • Swimmers should be prepared to remove shoes upon arrival to the pool deck, and follow the marked path to take a cleansing shower before entering the water.
  • Please arrive swim ready as change rooms are not available prior to a swim.
  • A small bin is provided on-deck to store personal items.
    • Place your bin on-deck adjacent your assigned lane space.
  • Swimmers are required to wear their non-medical face mask to and from their assigned in-water space.

Swimming Double-Wide Lanes

  • Swimmers to keep their distance in the water and at the walls, keep right, swim a counter-clockwise pattern, and pass only when safe to do so.

 

Daily Health Screening

All persons visiting UBC facilities or taking part in a program must be able to answer “no” to all of the following questions:

Have you, or members of your household, experienced any flu-like or cold symptoms within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or is awaiting COVID-19 test results within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, travelled internationally within the last 14 days, including to the USA?

  • If the answer is “yes” to any question on arrival, they will not be allowed to attend any programs for health and safety reasons. A supervisor will follow-up with them through phone or email to issue a credit for programs that are missed.
  • Translated written copies of pre-screening questions will be available to ensure language is not a barrier to understanding and adherence to health and safety measures.

Frequently Asked Questions

The facility will operate with reduced hours; however, as opportunities to increase access and programming becomes feasible the hours of operation may change.

Washrooms and post swim change rooms are available, but lockers, private showers, and water fountains are not available.
