For the enjoyment and safety of the BirdCoop Bouldering community, please adhere to the following rules and etiquette:
Overview of Key Rules
- Climbing shoes are required. Bare feet, socks, and outside shoes are not permitted.
- Loose chalk is permitted. Please be considerate in the amount of chalk used and take care to avoid creating airborne chalk by clapping, etc.
- No food, gum, or drinks except water are permitted.
- Please use water bottles and containers with a lid.
- Backpacks, bags, umbrellas, skateboards, and other large items are not permitted in the bouldering centre. Please use the short-term lockers outside the centre to store these items.
Bouldering Centre Rules
- Proper attire must be worn at all times, including a shirt or top.
- Backpacks, bags, umbrellas, skateboards, and other large items are not permitted in the bouldering centre.
- No personal (e.g. phones, water bottles, etc.) items on climbing mats.
- Sharp items (e.g. keys) must be stored in bags in cubbies or in a locker.
- No food, gum, or drinks except water are permitted.
- No running or roughhousing.
- Remove headphones if the gym is busy and monitor your surroundings while climbing.
- All persons, including spectators, entering the facility must complete and submit a waiver or consent form.
Climbing Shoe Rules
- Climbing shoes are required. Bare feet, socks, and outside shoes are not permitted.
- Rental climbing shoes are not allowed to leave the climbing area, including in the washrooms.
- Please wear socks with rental climbing shoes.
Climbing Etiquette
- Before climbing, inspect the problem. Make sure that your route does not intersect with one that is already being climbed on.
- Respect fall zones by monitoring the wall at all times and ensuring you are not in a climber’s fall zone.
- Please wait off the mats for your turn to climb.
- Downclimb when possible and fall safely. Always attempt to downclimb until you have reached a comfortable distance to jump off the wall. Follow the safe falling techniques taught in our gym orientation by bending your knees, rolling backwards, and keeping your arms in towards your body.
Chalk Use
- Please minimize chalk usage and avoid clapping or otherwise dispersing chalk into the air.
- Consider using unscented liquid chalk.
Youth & Teen Climbers
- Individuals must be at least age 8 and older to climb in the facility.
- Climbers age 18 and under require the completion of the Parent/Guardian Consent Form during their first visit and prior to climbing.
- Drop-in and single session visits are not available for climbers age 18 and under.
- A supervising adult must accompany climbers ages 13 and under:
- Ages 8-9 – One supervising adult per 2 youth climbers
- Ages 10-13 – One supervising adult per 3 youth/teen climbers
- Ages 14 and older – No accompaniment or supervision required
- Supervising adults:
- Must complete a waiver
- Are not permitted to climb
- Are not required to pay an entrance fee or have a membership
