Adult – Clinics

Starting tennis? This course will introduce players to the rules, scoring and positioning in singles and doubles play. The most basic introduction of all tennis strokes (serve, volley, groundstrokes) will be taught, focusing on impact point and proper court positioning. By the conclusion of the course, participants will know how to start and play points using the serve and return.

Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring their own tennis racket. If you do not have a racket, you may borrow one from the UBC Coach for each 1.0 session. Rackets will be cleaned after each session.

Notes: Participants will be required to answer COVID-19 screening questions before the start of each session. Sign-in for programming will be conducted at the entrance to the facility.

This course is designed to help participants improve their consistency by focusing on the impact point and proper footwork. Participants will further develop the skills and ball control necessary to challenge opponents in common situations including groundstrokes, serves and returns, approach shots, and net play within a 3/4 court. Participants will be taught how to receive a variety of shots including deep, short and wide shots.

Prerequisites: This course is form players at the 2.0 level, or for those who have successfully completed the 1.0 Clinic and have been referred by a coach.

Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring their own tennis racket.

In this course, players will develop more advanced ball control and consistency, as well as tactics to better understand the fundamentals of court coverage in both singles and doubles play. Players will learn to apply basic spins and receive spin for groundstrokes, volleys and serves.

Prerequisites:
This program is for players between the 2.5 and 3.0 level, or for those who have successfully completed the 2.0 Clinic and have been referred by a coach.

Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring their own tennis racket.

Notes: Participants will be required to answer COVID-19 screening questions before the start of each session. Sign-in for programming will be conducted at the entrance to the facility.

In this course players will learn to gain increased ball control and consistency, as well as tactics to better understand the fundamentals of court coverage in both singles and doubles play. This course will also focus on the offensive aspects of the game, including attacking, hitting the ball on the rise and finishing points at the net. Players will learn to apply spin and receive spin for groundstrokes, volleys and serves.

Prerequisites: This course is for players between the 3.5 and 4.0 level, or for those who have successfully completed the 2.5/3.0 Clinic and have been referred by a coach.

Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring their own tennis racket.

Drills are a perfect way to take your game to the next level. Our drills sessions are all about repetition on each stroke and helping you build confidence. These sessions are designed to put players through physical workouts with an emphasis on technique. Each session will be broken down in to three phases of play and focus on serve and return, rallying from the baseline, and playing at the net. Drills are high-paced and physically challenging.

Prerequisites: This course is for players between the 2.5 and 3.0 level. It is recommended to complete the 2.5/3.0 Clinic and be referred by a coach before registering for the 2.5/3.0 Drills.

Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring their own tennis racket.

Adult – Leagues, Programs, Workshops

The UBC Singles League is a popular choice for intermediate to advanced players who wish to add regular competition to their tennis practice. Competitive play is often the key to make that jump to the next level. This league runs in 3-week cycles and uses a competitive ladder format. Matches are scheduled for every Sunday evening between 4:00pm and 10:00pm. Each match is allotted 90 minutes to complete.

Prerequisites: This league is for players at the 3.0 level and above. Participants who do not meet the requirements for the minimum playing level may be asked to withdraw from the league and a full refund will be provided.

Required Equipment: Participants are required to bring their own tennis racket.

Seniors Tennis is a fun, non-competitive atmosphere for tennis players over 55. The goal is to enjoy the game of a lifetime, while improving your skills, meeting new players with similar interests, and staying active. Coaches will help to improve your skills by providing technical tips during drills. High Performance

This program is designed for high-level players who compete locally and/or provincially in both singles and doubles play. The technical, tactical, physical and mental aspects of the game are what players at this level need to explore and the drills in this program are designed to integrate these elements. Players will work to improve on the intense physical and technical aspects of the game.

Prerequisites: This program is for players at the 4.0 level and above. Participants must be approved for registration by a UBC High Performance Coach to confirm playing level. If you are unsure if you qualify, please email performance.tennis@ubc.ca.

Required Equipment: Participants are required to bring their own tennis racket.

The Champs program is specifically designed for players wanting to compete in 2-star provincial tournaments. Players will continue to further develop fundamental tactical and technical competencies, as well as mental skills such as determination, focus and teamwork. Players are expected to participate in at least 1 Tennis BC sanctioned tournament per term. It is strongly recommended that players also register for the optional Match Play sessions on Fridays.

Required Equipment: Participants are required to bring their own tennis racket, tennis shoes and skipping rope.

Notes: Parents/Guardians will be required to answer COVID-19 screening questions before the start of each session. Sign-in and sign-out for programming will be conducted at the entrance to the facility.

This program will give players a chance to compete, gain invaluable match play experience and have more fun playing the game they love.

Prerequisites: Participants must be approved for registration by the UBC High Performance Director. If you are unsure about whether or not you qualify, please email tennis.performance@ubc.ca. Players interested in this program who are not currently registered in any UBC Tennis programming can attend an Open Tryout or request an evaluation from one of our coaches. A registration link will be emailed to those approved for the program.

The Elite program is specifically designed for players competing in 3-star provincial tournaments and higher. Players will be practicing in a highly competitive and engaging environment to further develop their passion for the sport. Training themes will include tactical and technical development, as well as a strong emphasis on physical and mental skills. Players are expected to compete in at least 8 Tennis BC or Tennis Canada sanctioned tournaments annually. It is strongly recommended that players also register for the optional Match Play sessions on Saturdays and also arrange private lessons with your preferred High Performance Coach for an increased rate of development.

Required Equipment: Participants are required to bring their own tennis racket, tennis shoes and skipping rope.

The Elite program is specifically designed for players competing in 3-star provincial and higher. Players will be practicing in a highly competitive and engaging environment to further develop their passion for the sport. Training themes will include tactical and technical development, as well as a strong emphasis on physical and mental skills to prepare players to compete at college or university-level tennis. Players are expected to participate in at least 8 Tennis BC or Tennis Canada sanctioned tournaments annually. It is strongly recommended that players also register for the optional Match Play sessions on Fridays and also arrange private lessons with your preferred High Performance Coach for an increased rate of development.

The Green Fundamentals program is for players who are looking to start their tennis journey or are recreational players. Players will learn to serve, rally, play at the net, and keep score in singles and doubles play. Players will improve their tennis skills and learn the fundamentals of the sport through exciting practice and game-related activities. Upon completion of the program, players will have a better understanding of the technique for all strokes, understand court positioning for singles and doubles, and have basic knowledge of the rules and scoring. Green Fundamentals is played on a regulation-sized court with a low-compression transition ball. Proper learning and sportsmanship behaviours are also reinforced. Players will be assessed on their ability, skill and willingness to learn during the first week of the program. Players will then be placed in to either Fundamentals 1 or 2 to provide the highest quality experience for every player.

Required Equipment: Participants are asked to bring their own tennis racket. Shared rackets are available upon request.

The Red Fundamentals program is for players who are looking to start their tennis journey or are recreational players. Players will learn basic rally, serve and net play skills through various progressions. Players will improve their tennis skills and learn the fundamentals of the sport through exciting practice and game-related activities. Players will also be introduced to the fundamental movement skills (agility, balance, coordination) that are important for athletic development. Red Fundamentals uses a scaled-down court and over-sized tennis balls that are 75% slower than the standard. Proper court etiquette and sport behaviour will also be emphasized. Players will be assessed on their ability, skill and willingness to learn during the first week of the program. Players will then be placed in to either Fundamentals 1 or 2 to provide the highest quality experience for every player.
