Fitness Access & Orientation for Teens

UBC Rec’s fitness centres and classes include options for teens ages 13 to 18 with specific requirements depending on age. Please note that a signed copy of our Parental Consent form is required for all unaccompanied teenage participation.

Ages 12 and Under

  • Access to fitness centres & group fitness classes is not permitted 

Ages 13-15

  • Unaccompanied access to fitness centres & group fitness classes requires:
    • Completion of a Teen Fitness & Facility Orientation  
    • Completion of a Parent/Guardian Consent Form prior to the first visit 

Ages 16-18

  • Unaccompanied access to fitness centres & group fitness classes requires:
    • Completion of a Parent/Guardian Consent Form prior to the first visit 
  • Completion of a Teen Fitness & Facility Orientation is not required, but strongly recommended 

How to Access the Fitness Centres & Group Fitness

1. Download, complete, and return by email the Parent/Guardian Consent Form

Please ensure the Parent/Guardian Consent Form is submitted online prior to registering for an orientation session or your first visit to the fitness centres or attending a fitness class.

2. Set up a UBC Rec Login

A UBC Rec Login will be required to register for an orientation session and to purchase a membership.

3. Register for & attend a Teen Fitness & Facility Orientation

Facility orientations are a requirement for individuals aged 13-15. This step is optional for individuals aged 16-18.

Orientations sessions are offered weekly as a 60 minute workshop and designed to help youth learn to safely use and move throughout the fitness centres. Topics will include:

  • Facility:  Facility tour, fitness centre navigation, how to access changerooms, locker use and more.
  • Safety First: How to set up and use cardio and strength equipment correctly 
  • Gym Etiquette: Respecting equipment, space, and other members 
  • Form & Technique: Proper technique and movement patterns to prevent injury 
  • Goal Setting: How to create realistic, age-appropriate fitness goals 

For the orientation session:

  • Please wear your workout gear.
  • Bring your own lock if there is anything you would like to lock up during the session.
  • No large bags permitted in the fitness spaces. Ideally, leave valuables at home.
  • The session will focus on showing you the facility and you may get to try some of the equipment
  • Meet at the main lobby in Rec North and inform the staff at the main desk that you have arrived for the orientation session.

4. Purchase a fitness membership

Fitness memberships for teens are only available for purchase in-person. In-person purchase of a fitness membership can be paid for using a debit card, cash, or a credit card on file.
