UBC loves tradition. We also love watching people attempt physical feats they have no business attempting. Enter: Storm the Wall. For 4 days every year, UBC’s Vancouver campus transforms into a makeshift Olympic stadium, filled with students who suddenly care about athleticism and bystanders who are around to support their peers and some, just for the wipeouts.
It’s chaotic. It’s exhausting. It’s the most UBC thing you’ll ever do.
What Even Is Storm the Wall?
It’s pretty hard to miss the 12 foot wall that appears outside the Nest every March. But if you still don’t know about Storm the Wall, it’s UBC’s most legendary athletic event. Every year, students team up with friends take on the iconic relay – some even take on the whole course all by themselves.
It starts off normal enough: swim, sprint, bike, run. The final stretch? Climb a 12-foot wall with nothing but teamwork and prayer. Yesterday, you were cramming for midterms. Today, you’re contemplating whether your friend group has both the upper and lower body strength to launch you over this wall.
Whether you’re here to dominate with a competitive team or just vibe with your crew in a “just for fun” team, Storm the Wall has a place for you.
To Storm or Not to Storm?
You may be wondering, why would UBC students do this to themselves? Good question. The answer? Because it’s tradition.
UBC students love putting themselves through ridiculous challenges—see also: the Wreck Beach stairs, the Pit line at 11 PM, and finding a seat in IKB during midterms.
You could graduate without being a part of this tradition. But should you?
Want to sign up? UBC Recreation is waiting for you. Storm the Wall takes place from March 23-26, with registration closing on March 14. Grab a team and sign up before it’s too late!
