Program provided in partnership with UBC Sustainability
Learn about the current climate crisis through multiple perspectives, discover the impacts on our local and global communities, and explore solutions from an individual, collective and societal lens! This camp is designed to help youth understand and navigate the uncertainties of our changing world, and to foster resilience by developing their capacities to address the challenging emotions that are often associated with the climate crisis. Each day will include an educational portion with guest speakers and experts, as well as time to connect with nature through outdoor interactive activities. Journaling is used as a medium throughout the camp to help participants express their climate emotions and feelings, as well as learn ways to work through them. Participants will be encouraged to have conversations with their families about climate change and any associated feelings.
Please note: This camp is being offered as part of a research study that investigates effective models of climate change education in youth. While participation in this research study is entirely optional (and is NOT a requirement for camp participation), registrants will be contacted with further study information and the option to contribute to this research.
Prerequisites: No previous experience with climate change learning is required.
Required Equipment: Lunch, snacks, water bottle and weather appropriate clothing and footwear. This camp will run some activities outdoors, rain or shine.
Location Details: At Spring Break, this camp will meet at UBC Botanical Garden's reception centre. In the summer, camp will take place in Room 1006 in Neville Scarfe.
This camp is presented in collaboration with UBC Botanical Garden, UBC Sustainability Hub and the Sustainability Ambassadors program. This camp is also made possible through generous financial contributions from the Edith Lando Virtual Learning Centre and UBC Faculty of Education.
The Edith Lando Virtual Learning Centre is excited to offer 3 - 5 scholarships that will fully cover the cost of registration. Details and application available here.
