UBC Recreation Free Week

UBC Recreation Free Week | January 7-13, 2019

Free fitness and aqua fitness classes are running all week and there are numerous open houses with free activities and giveaways. You won’t want to miss out! No experience is required for any of the classes and all abilities are welcome! Try out as many classes as you want, for free!

How to participate:

No registration is required! Simply show up at the location of your classes 10 minutes before the scheduled start time and you’re ready to go! Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis with priority given to those who have registered for the full program. Everyone will be asked to sign a waiver.

Wednesday January 9 | 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Come check out UBC’s finest fitness facilities on campus. Boasting 8000 square feet of fitness centre space, 4 studios, lockers, gendered and a universal change room, and instructors that make instructional programs fun – there are plenty of exciting ways to work activity into your routine.
Highlights:

  • Enjoy a free TRX or High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Class in the ARC Lower Level Studio starting at 6:00 pm
  • Try something new at Hung Gar Kung Fu in the ARC Main Level Studio at 6:00 pm

Ever want to try your hand at tennis? Did you know we have a state-of-the-art public facility right here on campus? That’s right – no steep membership fees! Whether you have played tennis before, or if you’re brand new to the sport we have a program tailored just for you.
Highlights:

  • Meet our incredible tennis coaches and ask them any questions!
  • Try your hand at some on-court activities. Whether you want to complete some obstacle courses while bouncing a tennis ball, run some drills with our coaches, or rally against a coach – there’s an activity for all tennis levels!
  • Complimentary snacks in the lobby and giveaways!


Drop-In Skating

Free Skate at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre

Thursday January 10 | 3:45pm – 6:45pm
Every week the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre hosts a variety of public skating opportunities. Join us for a free skate to kick-off the semester! Don’t have a pair of skates? You can rent them from the Pro Shop at the arena! We’ll see you on the ice.
Highlights:

  • Free drop-in public skate opportunity during the hours of the open house. Check-in at the ProShop
  • Learn more about ice programming at UBC!
  • Free skate rentals for open house participants during the hours of the open house.


UBC Aquatic Centre Open House

UBC Aquatic Centre Open House

Tuesday January 17 | 5:00pm – 7:00pm
Come check out the UBC Aquatic Centre and try some free programs!
Highlights:

  • Dry activities for those that just want to stop by and check out the space
  • In-water activities for those who bring their swimsuits and towel
  • Free entrance to the aquatic centre for the duration of the open house.
  • The Wibit Inflatable Obstacle Course will be set up from 5:30pm to 6:30pm

Additional Free Opportunities at the UBC Aquatic Centre

Staff & Faculty Free Swim | Mon Jan 7 from 11:30am – 1:30pm

UBC Staff & Faculty are welcome to come and swim for free! Simply stop by with your staff ID card and enjoy a lunchtime swim, soak, or sauna break (Or all three!).

Intro to CPR Workshop | Tue Jan 8 from 4:30pm – 5:00pm

Receive hands-on CPR & AED training so you have the tools you need to respond in the event of an emergency.

Swim to Survive (Adult) | Wed Jan 9 from 4:30pm – 5:00pm

Learn how to stay safe on the water and how to do a self-rescue. You’ll leave this 30-minute program with a Swim to Survive certificate of completion.

Swim to Survive (Ages 8+) | Sat Jan 12 from 1:30pm – 2:00pm & 2:00pm – 2:30pm

Learn how your family can stay safe on the water, how to properly fit a life jacket, and how to do a self-rescue. You’ll leave this 30-minute program with a Swim to Survive certificate of completion and a temporary tattoo!
