Q&A with the Move U Crew

Ever wonder about the talented Move U Crew, who are they anyway? I could tell you but I thought it might be more interesting to hear from the Move U Crew members themselves. SO without further ado, I present to you, the Move U Crew!

Jonah (He, Him, His)

Q: What year are you in?

A: 5th Year!

Q: What faculty are you in?

A: Kinesiology

Q: Any cool hobbies? List ‘em all

A: Pickleball!

Q: When you started the move U Crew, what surprised you the most?

A: It’s more than just leading movement breaks, we promote and provide different services to help get our campus moving! Also was not expecting to be churning out a lot of video or blog content in this job too, but it really tested my creativity!

Q: Any Move U Crew initiatives you’re looking forward to?

A: Move UBC! This campaign is awesome and employs a lot of creative activations (like stair wraps, floor decals and this year a crazy hopscotch design!) around campus to inspire movement. Each year Move UBC gets better, and I can’t wait to see how it’ll evolve over time!

Q: What year are you in?

A: 2nd year

Q: What faculty are you in?

A: Kinesiology

Q: What’s your favourite physical activity?

A: Weightlifting!

Q: When you started the Move U Crew, what surprised you the most? And what’s a Move U highlight you’re most proud of?

A: Considering public speaking is (or used to be a) fear of mine, I’m surprised by how much energy I gained from leading a movement break in front of my first large class that had over 100 students. Getting over my fear of public speaking 🙂

Q: Who or what inspires you about the Move U Crew?

A: Our participants! Whether it’s seeing a whole lecture hall follow along for a movement break or working with a student during a physical activity coaching session, seeing others take actionable steps towards their health and wellness inspires me to do the same!

Q: What year are you in?

A: I am in my second year!

Q: What faculty are you in?

A: I am taking a Bachelor of Science in FNH and am looking to transfer to Kinesiology next year!

Q: What’s your fave Move U event?

A: My favourite Move U Event so far was our Slide Into Thrive event where I got to be an MC for an upbeat dance event!

Q: Any Move U Crew initiatives you’re looking forward to?

A: I am looking forward to Move UBC month in February and the many new and creative events that we are offering! Make sure to check out our MOVE UBC Calendar to join us for any of these events!

Q: Where are your fave places to chill or get active in Vancouver?

A: My favourite places to get active in Vancouver are Kits Beach basketball courts and the Grouse Grind. Kits has an awesome basketball culture and is really good for some competition and the grouse grind is a challenging but rewarding hike.

Sam (She, Her, Hers)

Q: What year are you in?

A: 3rd year!

Q: What faculty are you in?

A: English Lit

Q: What’s your favourite physical activity?

A: I can’t choose one! I adore any kind of pilates, dance, and walking

Q: What inspired you to apply to be on the Crew?

A: I grew up as a competitive dancer and assisted in some classes at my studio. There, I realized that leading others in movement brings me so much joy! I felt the mental and physical impact of not dancing or moving as much in general during my first year of uni. The Move U Crew is definitely something I would’ve benefitted from had I known about it earlier which is why I was so keen on joining!

Q: What’s a Move U highlight you’re most proud of?

A: Definitely the Jonas Brothers “Burnin’ Up” movement break that I created for the Thrive By the Fire event in November 2021. I love a throwback Disney jam so when this song came on my music queue I instantly knew this would be a super fun dance break to lead…plus I love a pun so I couldn’t resist.

Q: What year are you in?

A: 5th year

Q: What faculty are you in?

A: Faculty of Science, Major in Pharmacology

Q: How did you first hear about the Move U Crew? And what inspired you to apply?

A: In my second year, I wanted to learn more about and get involved with the health promotion scene at UBC and found the Move U Crew. I hope to work as a Public Health Physician in the future and was really drawn to working towards improving the health and wellbeing of the UBC community through the Move U Crew.

Q: What’s a Move U highlight you’re most proud of? And what’s your fave Move U event?

A: The puppy walk for sure. It made me so happy to see my pup put a smile on people’s faces. I really enjoy the biweekly Wellbeing Walks. It’s such a simple way to break up my day and enjoy the fresh air.
